An Honest, Loving AnswerIs Being Gay A Sin?

Pastor Johnny Ova Sound of Heaven 9 min read

This is one of the most painful questions in the church, and honestly, the way it has been answered has driven a lot of good people straight out the door and away from God. So before anything else, if that is you, I want to say I am glad you are here, and I am going to give you a straight answer wrapped in the truth that matters most.

Here at Sound of Heaven, we do read the Bible as saying it is a sin. I am not going to pretend otherwise or play word games with you.

But if you stop reading there, you have missed the entire point, and so has most of the church. Please keep going, because the rest of this changes everything.

Christians have argued about this for decades. Sincere, Bible-loving people land in different places, and you can see the range of official positions across churches in this overview from Pew Research. We have told you where we land. Now let me tell you why that is not the part that should keep you up at night.

The Part Everyone Skips

It Is One Sin On A Very Long List

Here is what gets lost. If it is a sin, it is one sin among a whole crowd of them, standing right next to mine. The Bible is blunt about this, and it levels everybody.

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

Romans 3:23

All. Not some. Not the people over there. Me included. My pride, the way I can be short with people, the times I have judged someone before I knew a thing about them. The Bible actually has far more to say about greed, gossip, arrogance, and how we treat the poor than it ever says about this one topic. Somehow the church went quiet on the sins most of us commit every day and got loud about this one. That is not honesty. That is picking a target.

Pride
Greed
Gossip
Judging others
Where you land on this
A hundred things I did this week

Same list. Same floor. Nobody gets to stand above anybody.

Why The Argument Misses

Even If We Settled It, Nothing Would Change

People spend years fighting over a handful of verses on this. And here is the thing I keep coming back to: even if everyone agreed tomorrow, it would not change your standing or mine one bit. Because the whole message of the Bible is that we all fall short and we all need the same rescue.

If being gay is a sin, you need Jesus. If somehow it is not, you still need Jesus, because of everything else. And I need Jesus for a list of my own. So the argument people treat as the main event is, honestly, beside the point. The cross was never for the people who had it together. There are no such people.

"God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Romans 5:8

Still sinners. Not cleaned up first. That is the door everyone walks through, the exact same way.

The Sin Nobody Wants To Name

How We Have Treated People Is The Greater Sin

Let me say something plainly, because it needs saying. The way Christians have treated gay people, the coldness, the contempt, the jokes, the making someone feel like a problem instead of a person, that is a sin too. And I would argue it is a far more serious one.

Look at who Jesus actually got angry at. It was almost never the people everyone else looked down on. He was gentle with them. His sharpest words were for religious people who stacked heavy loads on others and used God's name to make people feel small. He told them to take the plank out of their own eye before going after the speck in someone else's.

"Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone."

John 8:7

When people dragged a woman to Jesus to be condemned, He did not pile on. He cleared the crowd with one sentence and then treated her with a dignity nobody else in that story managed. If the church made you feel less-than, unwelcome, or unlovable, that was wrong. It was not Jesus. And on behalf of every believer who ever made you feel that way, I am sorry.

Plainly

You are not a project. You are not a debate topic. You are a person made in the image of God, loved by Him beyond what you can imagine, and there is nothing about you that puts you out of His reach.

So Let's Be Clear

You Are Welcome, And Heaven Is Open

Let me answer the questions under the question, the ones that actually hurt to ask.

Can I Go To Heaven?

Yes. Heaven is not earned by being straight, or by being good enough. It comes through Jesus, and that door is open to you exactly the same as it is open to me. No asterisk.

Am I Welcome At Church?

Yes. Not welcome to sit quietly in the back and feel judged. Welcome. As you are, today, with your questions and your story. You do not have to fix anything first.

We are not a church of people who have arrived. We are a room full of people who fell short and found grace, and we saved you a seat. Wherever you are with God, whatever you believe about all of this, you can come and be loved here.

The Heart Of It

God's love for you is not on hold, waiting for you to sort something out. It is already yours, right now, fully. The invitation is not clean yourself up and then come. It is come, and let Him love you, and walk it out with Him from there. That is true for every single one of us.

Where To Go From Here

Come And See For Yourself

If any of this stirred something, do not overthink it. You do not need the perfect theology or all the answers first. You just need to turn toward the God who already turned toward you. Talk to Him honestly. Read about who Jesus really is. And if you have been carrying wounds from religious people, let this be a small start at healing them.

If you want to keep going, we wrote about who God actually is in who is the real God, about the whole story of the faith in what Christianity actually is, about the pain that makes faith hard in why God lets bad things happen, and about the good things He has for your life in God's plan for your life.

We Would Be Honored

You Do Not Have To Carry It Alone

Maybe something in you is stirring, or maybe you are just tired, or hurt, or hopeful. Whatever it is, you can bring it here. Send us what is on your heart, an honest question, a hard story, or a request for prayer, and a real person from our church will respond with care, not judgment. You can also reach our team anytime on the prayer page.

Honest Answers

Common Questions

Is being gay a sin according to the Bible?+

At Sound of Heaven we do read the Bible as saying it is a sin, and we say that honestly. But we hold it as one sin among many, standing right next to pride, greed, and judgment. We all fall short and we all need Jesus the same way, so it is never a reason to treat anyone as less-than.

Can gay people go to heaven?+

Yes. Heaven is never earned by being good enough or by anyone's sexuality. It comes through Jesus, and that door is open to every person the exact same way. Anyone who says otherwise has added a rule the gospel does not have.

Are gay people welcome at Sound of Heaven?+

Fully and genuinely welcome, exactly as you are, today. Not to be fixed or singled out, but to be loved and to belong. We are all people who fell short and found grace, and there is a seat here for you.

Isn't it hypocritical to call it a sin but still welcome people?+

Not at all. Every person in church is a sinner welcomed by grace, including the pastor. If we only welcomed people with no sin, the building would be empty. Welcoming people while being honest about our shared need for Jesus is not hypocrisy, it is the whole point.

What did Jesus say about it?+

Jesus never singled this topic out. He centered everything on loving God and loving your neighbor, and He was gentle with the people others looked down on. His hardest words were for religious people who used God to make others feel small. That tells us where our energy should go.
