Bible Study · Set Apart For One Use

What Does Consecrate In The Bible Mean?

It means set apart for a purpose. Altars and garments were consecrated too, which tells you the word is about assignment rather than intensity.

The Short Answer

What The Word Means

Straight Answer

Every time you meet the word consecrate in the Bible, it means to set something apart for a particular use. The Hebrew root is qadash, the same root behind holy, and the Greek is hagiazo. It is a word about assignment, not about intensity.

That is why altars, garments, a tent, a day of the week and a whole nation all get consecrated in Scripture. Furniture cannot be sincere. It can only be reserved for one use and not another.

Modern usage has bent the word into something else, and the bend is worth naming because it turns a gift into a transaction.

The Word

Qadash And Its Range

HebrewqadashOver 170 Uses
The core idea

To be set apart, separated, devoted to a purpose. The adjective qadosh is what we translate holy. Same family, one idea.

What gets consecrated

Priests in Exodus 29, the altar and the tabernacle in Exodus 40, the firstborn in Exodus 13, a field in Leviticus 27, and the seventh day in Genesis 2:3.

A scholarly refinement

Carolann Elliott and Shawna Dolansky argue that “wholeness is an essential aspect of the ancient Israelite concept”, not just separation. Uncut altar stones, unblemished offerings.

The Greek

Hagiazo, from hagios, holy. Same movement of thought. John 17:17 has Jesus ask the Father to sanctify His disciples by the truth.

Takeaway

Holy does not primarily mean morally impressive. It means belonging to God rather than to general use. The moral content follows from the assignment.

The Key Verse

The Word Everybody Quotes

One verse carries most of the modern teaching on this, and the small word in the middle of it changes everything.

“Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.”

Joshua 3:5
How It Gets Quoted

Consecrate yourselves so that the Lord will do amazing things. Set apart enough days and the breakthrough follows. Consecration as the lever.

What It Says

Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things. The wonder is already announced. The consecration is the response to it.

The Hebrew conjunction is ki, giving the reason. God has already decided to part the Jordan. Joshua is telling the people to get ready for something that is coming regardless, not to earn something that is pending.

Manage My Giving

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."2 Corinthians 9:7

Saying It Plainly

Consecration Is Not A Lever

There is a whole teaching built on this word. Twenty one days of consecration to release a promise. A consecrated season to move the hand of God. Fasting measured out in units because a longer stretch gets a bigger result.

We are going to be direct: that is a formula, and it is the same machinery as a prosperity teaching with the vocabulary swapped. The moment the length of your devotion determines what God does, you are not consecrating anything. You are buying.

Where We Stand, Plainly

God cannot be triggered. There is no input that obligates Him, and every attempt to find one ends the same way, with sincere people escalating. If twenty one days did not work, try forty. If the fast did not work, add sleep deprivation. The logic has no floor, and the people who go furthest down it are usually the ones already in pain.

Isaiah 58 is where this gets settled. Israel complains that they have fasted and God has not noticed, and the answer is not that they fasted insufficiently. It is that they fasted while exploiting their workers and quarrelling, and the fast God chose is to loose the chains of injustice, share food with the hungry and house the homeless poor. The problem was never the quantity.

So we practise consecration at Sound of Heaven and we teach fasting. What we will not do is sell it as a mechanism. Set apart time because attention is the thing you actually have to give, not because a meter is filling up somewhere.

And notice which direction the New Testament runs. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 asks God to sanctify you through and through. Hebrews 10:10 says we have been made holy through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. The verb is mostly something God does, and the tense in Hebrews is already finished.

What does Joshua 3:5 actually say?

Consecrate yourselves so that the Lord will do amazing things
Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things
Consecrate yourselves until the Lord does amazing things

The Hebrew ki gives the reason, not the condition. The parting of the Jordan was already decided. Consecration is the response to an announcement, not the price of one.

In Practice

What It Looks Like Now

None of the above removes the practice. It relocates it. Here is what the word does once it is pointed the right way.

Romans 12:1

Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. Paul calls this your true and proper worship. Bodies, not moods.

1 Peter 2:9

A chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. The consecration language that once applied to a tribe now applies to the whole church.

1 Corinthians 6:19

Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. The consecrated object in the New Testament is a person, which raises the stakes on ordinary decisions.

2 Timothy 2:21

An instrument for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. Useful is the operative word.

Which means consecration mostly shows up in things nobody watches. What you do with a free evening. Whether the money is actually available when somebody needs it. Whether the version of you at home matches the version at church.

Where This Lands

Reserved, Not Impressive

Here is the picture the word gives you, and it is a relief once you see it.

A bowl in the tabernacle was not holier than a bowl in a kitchen because it was better made. It was holy because it had one use. It had been taken out of general circulation and assigned. Nobody asked the bowl to feel anything.

That is what is being asked of you, and it is both smaller and larger than the intensity version. Smaller, because it does not require a spiritual state you have to manufacture. Larger, because it covers everything rather than a designated season.

And the consecrating is mostly God's verb. Hebrews says it is done. What is left is living like somebody who has already been assigned, which is a different and much steadier thing than trying to qualify.

For related ground, see righteousness, the anointing, what fasting is, grace, sanctification, the ephod and what worship is.

The Whole Thing In One Line

Consecrate means set apart for a use, it was applied to furniture as well as people, Joshua 3:5 makes it the response to an announced act of God rather than the price of one, and Hebrews says the decisive consecrating is already finished.

If You Have Been Trying To Qualify

A lot of people are working through a checklist nobody actually gave them. Send it here and somebody at Sound of Heaven will pray over it with you.

Questions People Ask

Questions About Consecration

What does consecrate in the bible mean?

It means to set something apart for a particular use. The Hebrew root is qadash, the same root behind the word holy, and the Greek equivalent is hagiazo. Priests, the altar, the tabernacle, garments, the firstborn, a field and the seventh day are all consecrated in Scripture, which shows the word is about assignment rather than about a feeling or a level of effort.

Is consecration the same as holiness?

They come from the same Hebrew root. Holy does not primarily mean morally impressive. It means belonging to God rather than being in general use, and the moral content follows from the assignment. Carolann Elliott and Shawna Dolansky argue the ancient concept also carries a sense of wholeness, which is why altar stones had to be uncut and offerings unblemished.

Does consecrating yourself make God act?

No. Joshua 3:5 is the verse usually quoted for that, and it says consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things. The Hebrew ki gives the reason, not the condition. God had already decided to part the Jordan. Consecration there is the response to an announced act of God, not the price of one.

What about fasting for a set number of days?

Fasting is good practice and Scripture assumes it. What Scripture never does is attach a rate of exchange to it. Isaiah 58 has Israel complaining that they fasted and God did not notice, and the answer is not that they fasted too little. It is that they fasted while exploiting workers, and the fast God chose was to loose the chains of injustice and feed the hungry.

How do Christians consecrate themselves today?

Romans 12:1 says offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. 1 Peter 2:9 applies the old priestly language to the whole church. 1 Corinthians 6:19 makes the consecrated object a person rather than an item of furniture. In practice it shows up in ordinary unwatched decisions rather than in a designated season.
