What Is Holiness? Not A List Of Rules

Holiness is God being wholly Himself and wholly good, and in Jesus it walks straight toward the people religion kept at a distance.

The Short Answer

Belonging To God, And Looking Like Him

Straight Answer

What is holiness? In the Bible it means set apart, belonging to God and marked by His character. God is holy because He is utterly unlike anything He made and utterly good.

People are holy because God claims them. In Christ believers are already made holy, and walking in holiness means letting His love reshape how we live, not keeping a list so we can feel cleaner than the person next to us.

That is the Sound of Heaven position, and it cuts against a lot of what people have been handed under the word. So let's start with what went wrong, then go back to the text and let Jesus show us what holy actually looks like.

The Version Many Of Us Inherited

The Rulebook Version Of Holiness

What Holiness Became

A code of conduct. Hem lengths, haircuts, no movies, no makeup, no dancing, and a quiet ranking of who in the room is most separated from the world. Fail the list and you are unholy. Keep it and you are safe.

What Scripture Means By It

A relationship before it is a behavior. God sets people apart for Himself, makes them His own through Jesus, and then shapes them into His likeness from the inside. The fruit is love, not a dress code.

Let's be fair to the people who built the rulebook. The Holiness movement grew out of John Wesley's teaching on Christian perfection, and in the nineteenth century Methodists like Phoebe Palmer, who published The Way of Holiness in 1843, pressed believers to take change seriously. They were right that grace is supposed to make a difference. Hebrews 12:14 really does tell us to pursue holiness. A faith that changes nothing is not the faith of the New Testament.

But in many churches that hunger for real change hardened into outward standards, and the standards became the point. What started as a longing to be close to God turned into a way to measure each other.

And it always lands hardest on the same people. Teenagers who get told their clothes are the problem. Women who carry the weight of everyone else's thoughts. New believers with a past, who hear on their first Sunday that they are welcome but not quite clean. People who walked away from church and still flinch at the word holy because it only ever meant shame.

That version of holiness is wrong. Not because God does not care how we live, He cares very much, but because it gets the direction backwards. It says clean yourself up and then you can come close. The Bible says God comes close, and that is what makes you clean.

The Word Study

What The Word Holy Actually Means

The Hebrew and Greek words both carry the same core idea, and it is simpler and more beautiful than most of us were taught.

HebrewQadoshקָדוֹשׁHoly, Set Apart
The root

Built on the root q-d-sh. The noun is qodesh, holiness or a holy thing. The adjective qadosh describes what belongs to that sphere.

The core idea

Set apart, distinct, belonging to God. Ground can be holy (Exodus 3:5). A day can be holy (Genesis 2:3). Bowls in the tabernacle can be holy. None of those had morals. They were holy because God claimed them.

Greek

Hagios, holy. From the same family come hagiazo, to make holy or set apart, and hagiasmos, the word behind holiness in Hebrews 12:14.

Saints

The New Testament calls ordinary believers hoi hagioi, the holy ones. That is where the word saints comes from.

The rabbis read it the same way. Writing in the St Andrews Encyclopaedia of Theology, Alan Mittleman notes that “Rabbinic interpretation often glosses biblical holiness (kodesh) as separateness, being set apart.”

Notice what that does. Holiness starts with ownership, not performance. A cup on the tabernacle table was holy on the day it was set there, before it had done anything. That is why a separate post on what it means to consecrate in the Bible matters so much here. God sets things and people apart for Himself first, and the purpose follows.

Takeaway

Holy means claimed by God. Behavior grows out of belonging. It never works the other way around.

God's Own Holiness

How God Is Holy

When Scripture calls God holy, it means two things at once. He is other, not a bigger version of us and not one power among many. And He is morally beautiful, completely pure, true and good all the way through. Exodus 15:11 asks who is like Him, majestic in holiness. The answer the whole Bible gives is no one.

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

Isaiah 6:3 (NIV)

Hebrew often makes a superlative by repetition, the way the inner room of the tabernacle is called the holy of holies. Saying it three times is as strong as the language gets. And the second half of the verse is easy to miss. His holiness does not keep Him away from the earth. It fills it. That connects directly to the glory of God, the weight of who He is showing up where people can see it.

Now watch what happens to Isaiah. He sees the Lord and falls apart. “Woe to me! I am ruined!” he says, a man of unclean lips among a people of unclean lips. That is what real holiness does to us. It is not a scolding. It is clarity. You finally see yourself honestly.

But God does not leave him there. A coal from the altar touches his lips and he hears, “your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” The holy God does not destroy the unclean man. He cleanses him and then sends him.

Hosea 11:9 says something similar. God refuses to act on His fierce anger toward Israel, and the reason He gives is that He is God and not a man, the Holy One among them. Read that slowly. His holiness is the reason for His mercy. Human anger retaliates. God's holiness is so far above ours that it heals instead.

Holiness With Skin On

What Holiness Looks Like In Jesus

Everything we think we know about holiness has to pass through Jesus, because He is the full and final picture of who God is. Some of the ways people acted and legislated in God's name in the Old Testament do not survive that test. His holiness does, and it looks nothing like the rulebook.

He touched the leper

Under the purity laws, touching a man with a skin disease made you unclean. In Mark 1 Jesus reaches out and touches him anyway. Uncleanness did not flow into Jesus. Wholeness flowed out of Him.

He ate with sinners

Tax collectors, prostitutes, people the religious leaders would not share a table with. Mark 2 records the complaint, and Jesus answers that it is the sick who need a doctor.

He let a sinful woman weep on His feet

In Luke 7 a Pharisee is sure a real prophet would keep her away. Jesus lets her stay and says her many sins are forgiven, because she loved much.

He called the man who told Him to leave

After the huge catch of fish, Peter says, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:8, NIV). Jesus does not go away. He tells him not to be afraid and makes him a fisher of people.

Do you see the pattern? In the old way of thinking, holiness had to be protected from contamination. In Jesus, holiness is the stronger force. It moves toward the unclean and makes them clean. The Pharisees were not bad people for wanting to be holy. They just had the arrow pointing the wrong way.

When Jesus touched the man with leprosy, what happened?

Jesus became ceremonially unclean, as the law said
The man was made clean, because holiness flowed out of Jesus
Nothing, because Jesus healed him from a distance

Mark 1 says Jesus reached out and touched him, and the man was cleansed. In Jesus holiness is contagious in the other direction. It does not need protecting from broken people. It restores them.

Your Standing

You Have Already Been Made Holy

This is the part legalism never lets people hear. If you belong to Jesus, you are holy. Not trying to become holy so God will accept you. Holy, now, because of what He did.

“And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

Hebrews 10:10 (NIV)

Paul says Jesus reconciled us through His death “to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation” (Colossians 1:22, NIV). And look who Paul calls holy. First Corinthians opens by addressing the church in Corinth as those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy. That church had division, lawsuits, sexual scandal and drunkenness at the Lord's table. He corrects all of it. But he starts by telling them who they are.

Where We Stand, Plainly

At Sound of Heaven we believe holiness is first a gift and a standing. God makes you His own in Christ, and your identity is settled before your behavior catches up. We reject any teaching that makes outward standards the test of whether someone is saved, or that uses the word holy to shame people into line.

We also reject the opposite error. Being made holy is not permission to stay the same. The same Spirit who sets you apart goes to work in you, and a life that belongs to God starts to look like Him. That ongoing work is what the Bible calls sanctification, and we unpack it in its own study on sanctification. This post is about the starting point: you are already His.

If The Word Holy Still Hurts

Some of you were measured against a holiness standard for years and always came up short. Maybe you still hear a voice that says you are too far gone, too stained, too much. That voice is the accuser, and it is lying to you.

You do not have to earn your way back into the room. Jesus already walked out to meet you. If you want someone to pray with you about it, you can reach us any time through our prayer page.

Living It Out

What Walking In Holiness Looks Like

So if holiness is not a rulebook, what does it look like on a Tuesday in Deer Park? Here is how the New Testament fills it in. Every one of these flows out of belonging, not into it.

Set apart for, not away from

Jesus prayed that His people would not be taken out of the world but kept from the evil one (John 17:15). Holiness does not mean hiding from people. It means belonging to God in the middle of them.

Love is the measure

Paul says love fulfills the whole law (Romans 13:10). That is the law of Christ. If your holiness makes you colder toward people, it is not His.

A renewed mind

Romans 12:2 talks about being transformed by the renewing of your mind. Holiness grows as lies about God and about you get replaced with truth.

Your body belongs to Him too

Integrity with money, faithfulness in marriage, honesty in speech. These matter because you matter to God, not because a leader is watching.

The Spirit's fruit

Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. The fruit of the Spirit is what holiness grows, and fruit grows, it is not stapled on.

Holiness is shared

Peter calls the church a holy nation (1 Peter 2:9). Nobody walks this alone. It happens in a family that tells each other the truth in love.

When 1 Peter 1:16 quotes Leviticus, “Be holy, because I am holy,” this is what it is asking for. Not a copy of someone's standards. A family resemblance. You are a new creation, so live like the Father you belong to.

Takeaway

The question is never how far away from sinners you can stay. It is how much you look like Jesus, who went toward them.

Where This Lands

Holy Looks Like Jesus

If you want to know what holiness is, don't start with a list. Start with the One Isaiah saw, and then look at the face of Jesus, because that is the same God with nothing hidden.

He is completely other and completely good. He does not flinch from what is broken in you. He touches it. He calls you His, He makes you holy by His own sacrifice, and then He spends the rest of your life making you look like Him. That is not pressure. That is the Kingdom, here and now, working its way through ordinary people.

So stop trying to earn a word God has already spoken over you. Walk in it. Let it make you kinder, freer and more honest, and let it send you toward people the way it sent Him.

The Whole Thing In One Line

Holiness means belonging to a God who is wholly other and wholly good, revealed in Jesus who made the unclean clean, so believers are made holy in Him and grow to look like Him, not by keeping a list but by being loved into His likeness.

If Holiness Has Felt Like Shame

Tell us where you are. Someone at Sound of Heaven will pray with you and walk through it with you, no lecture attached.

Questions People Ask

Questions About Holiness

What is holiness in the Bible?

In the Bible, holiness means being set apart and belonging to God. The Hebrew qadosh and the Greek hagios both carry that sense. God is holy because He is completely unlike anything He made and completely good. Things and people become holy because God claims them, which is why ground, days and tabernacle vessels could be called holy. For believers, holiness begins as a gift in Christ and then shows up as a life that increasingly looks like Jesus, marked by love, truth and mercy rather than a list of outward rules.

What does it mean to be holy as God is holy?

Leviticus 19:2 and 1 Peter 1:16 both say be holy because I am holy. It means a family resemblance, not a copy of someone's standards. God's holiness is His otherness and His moral beauty, and Jesus shows us exactly what that looks like: truthful, pure, and moving toward broken people to heal them. Being holy as God is holy means belonging to Him and letting His character grow in us, so that we become more loving, honest and free, not more distant from people who are struggling.

Is holiness the same as sanctification?

They are closely related and share the same Greek word family. Holiness describes what God is and what we become when He claims us. Hebrews 10:10 says believers have already been made holy through the sacrifice of Jesus once for all. Sanctification is usually used for the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit shaping our lives to match that standing. So you are made holy in Christ at the start, and sanctification is the lifelong process of growing into who God already says you are.

What does without holiness no one will see the Lord mean?

Hebrews 12:14 tells believers to pursue peace with everyone and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. The writer is not setting up a behavior test for salvation. The same letter already said we have been made holy through Christ. The point is that real faith in a holy God produces a changed life, and a community that pursues peace and holiness together sees God at work among them. It is an invitation to keep walking, not a threat hanging over the anxious.

Do Christians have to follow holiness standards like dress codes?

No. Scripture calls believers to modesty, integrity and love, but it never makes hair length, makeup or clothing rules the measure of holiness. Jesus corrected religious leaders who focused on outward cleanliness while neglecting justice and mercy. Personal convictions are fine, and Romans 14 asks us to respect each other's conscience. What goes wrong is turning one group's standards into a test of salvation or a tool for shaming people. Holiness is about belonging to God and looking like Jesus, not passing an inspection.
