I Am The Way The Truth And The Life: What Jesus Meant

Spoken at a dinner table on the last night, to a disciple who admitted he was lost. Read where John put it, this verse is an invitation home before it is anything else.

The Short Answer

An Answer For A Lost Disciple

Straight Answer

When Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life, He was answering Thomas, who had just admitted the disciples did not know where Jesus was going or how to get there. Jesus did not hand him a map. He pointed to Himself.

The destination is the Father, and Jesus is how we get there, what the Father is really like, and the life of God given to us now. A few verses later He says the Father and the Son will come and make their home with anyone who loves Him.

Read it where John placed it, in a room at night with frightened friends. Pull it out of that room and it turns into a slogan, and sometimes a club.

The Setting

A Towel, A Betrayal, And A Question

John 14 opens with Jesus telling the disciples not to let their hearts be troubled. Those are words for scared people, and the night had given them reasons.

John 13:1-17
The Towel

Jesus washes their feet, including His betrayer's.

John 13:30
Judas Leaves

He goes out, and John adds a short, heavy line: it was night.

John 13:33-36
Where Are You Going?

Jesus says where He is going they cannot come yet. Peter asks the obvious question.

John 14:5-6
Thomas Admits It

We do not know where you are going. Jesus answers with the sentence this whole article is about.

John 14:8-9
Philip Asks To See

Show us the Father. Jesus answers that anyone who has seen Him has seen the Father.

Peter, Thomas, Philip and the other Judas in verse 22 all ask versions of one question: where are you going, and how do we come with you? John 14:6 answers honest confusion, and the first people to hear it were His closest friends.

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

John 14:5-6 · NIV

Thomas gets remembered for doubting. Here he is the one honest enough to say what everyone was thinking, and Jesus answers him with the clearest sentence in the chapter.

My Father's House

The Rooms Are Closer Than You Were Told

Just before Thomas speaks, Jesus says His Father's house has many rooms and that He is going to prepare a place for them. Most of us learned to hear that as a description of heaven after we die, with Jesus away building mansions in the sky.

John does not leave us guessing. He uses the same Greek word later in the chapter, and the movement runs the other way.

“Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.”

John 14:23 · NIV
GreekMonēμονήUsed Twice In The NT
John 14:2

Many monāi in the Father's house. Rooms, dwelling places, or in the King James, mansions.

John 14:23

The Father and the Son make their monē with the one who loves Jesus. The only other place it appears.

The root

From menō, to remain or abide, the verb of John 15.

What it shows

The place Jesus prepares is a dwelling with the Father, and the Father comes to make it with us.

So where was Jesus going to prepare that place? Through the cross and the empty tomb to the Father. And how does He come for them? John answers inside the same chapter. Jesus promises He will not leave them as orphans and that He will come to them (14:18), and that the Spirit of truth will live with them and be in them (14:17).

The room in the Father's house is not a cabin waiting at the end of your life. It is life with the Father, opened by Jesus and moved into by the Spirit, now. Death does not end that life. It just is not the starting line.

In John 14:23, who does the traveling to make a home?

The believer, who must travel to a distant heaven to find it
The Father and the Son, who come and make their home with the one who loves Jesus
No one, because the home only opens after everyone dies

The word John used for the rooms in verse 2 returns in verse 23, and it moves toward us. The dwelling Jesus prepared is life with the Father, and He brings it to the one who loves Him.

The I Am Sayings

Seven Pictures, One Name

John 14:6 is one of seven sayings in John where Jesus says I am and gives a picture. An eighth, with no picture at all, explains the rest.

John 6:35 · Bread

After feeding a crowd: the bread of life.

John 8:12 · Light

Whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness. The light of the world.

John 10:9 · The Gate

The way into the fold and out to pasture.

John 10:11 · Shepherd

The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

John 11:25 · Resurrection

Said to Martha, just before He called Lazarus out.

John 14:6 · Way, Truth, Life

Said to Thomas, who did not know where to go.

John 15:1 · The Vine

Remain in me. Life flows from connection, not effort.

John 8:58 · Before Abraham

No picture. Just I am, and the crowd picked up stones.

That last one carries the weight of the others. When God gives Moses His name at the burning bush, the Greek translation of Exodus that Jews were reading in Jesus' day renders it with the same two words, egō eimi. The crowd in John 8 understood the claim. More on that in I Am Who I Am and our walk through all the I Am statements.

So I am the way is not a good guide describing a route. It is God Himself come to walk you home.

Manage My Giving

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."2 Corinthians 9:7

The Way

The First Christians Were Called The Way

Before anyone called them Christians, the followers of Jesus had another name. When Saul set out for Damascus to arrest them, Luke says he was hunting for people who belonged to the Way.

and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

Acts 9:2 · NIV

The name keeps showing up in Acts (19:9, 19:23, 22:4, 24:14, 24:22). The Way was not a doctrine you signed. It was a road you walked, with a Person, in a community, and the whole city could see which direction you were heading.

They were not the only Jews using that language. The community behind the Dead Sea Scrolls took Isaiah 40:3 as its charter, going out into the wilderness “to prepare the way of Him,” and its rule speaks of giving true knowledge “to those who have chosen the Way” (the Community Rule, in Geza Vermes's translation). All four Gospels open John the Baptist's ministry with that same verse from Isaiah.

So the name made a sharp claim. The way the prophets told Israel to prepare had arrived, and it had a face.

Takeaway

Following Jesus was called the Way because it is one. You do not arrive by agreeing with a sentence. You walk it with Him, today, and keep walking.

Truth And Life

Truth Is A Person, Life Starts Now

The Greek words are ordinary: hodos, a road; alētheia, truth; zōē, life. The surprise is that Jesus says He is each of them.

Truth Has A Face

In John, truth is what God is really like, finally shown without distortion. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ (John 1:17). When Pilate later asks what truth is, the answer is standing in front of him.

Jesus Corrects The Picture

This is why we read the whole Bible through Him. People across Scripture spoke and acted in God's name, sometimes accurately and sometimes not. Anyone who has seen Jesus has seen the Father (John 14:9), so Jesus gets the final word.

Life Is Present Tense

Eternal life in John is a kind of life that begins when you know Him. In John 5:24 the one who believes has eternal life and has crossed over from death to life. Has, already.

Life Is A Gift

Eternal life belongs to God, and He gives it. John 3:16 sets it against perishing, not endless torment, as we unpack in what the Bible says about Gehenna.

“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”

John 17:3 · NIV

Knowing, in John, is relationship rather than information, and it can begin on an ordinary Tuesday in traffic on the Sagtikos.

The Hard Part

Is Jesus The Only Way?

No one comes to the Father except through me. That half of the verse starts most of the arguments. Christians who take it seriously have landed in more than one place, and each deserves a fair hearing.

Three ReadingsThe Only WayStated Fairly
Exclusivist

Jesus is the only way, and only those who consciously trust Him in this life are saved. Its strength: it takes Acts 4:12 at face value.

Inclusivist

Jesus is the only way, and His saving work can reach people who never clearly heard His name. C.S. Lewis pictured this in The Last Battle, and Catholic teaching since Vatican II holds a version of it. Its strength: John 1:9 calls Jesus the true light that gives light to everyone.

Pluralist

Many roads lead to God and Jesus is one of them. Its appeal is humility. Its problem is this verse.

The first two agree on what John 14:6 says: nobody comes to the Father around Jesus or without Him. They disagree on how far His reach extends.

Where We Stand, Plainly

At Sound of Heaven we believe Jesus is the way to the Father. Not a way. The way. We will not trim that to make it more comfortable, and pluralism, however kindly meant, does not fit what Jesus said.

The verse says no one comes except through Jesus. It does not say except through a correct prayer, a particular church, or a sermon heard by a certain age. Who Jesus brings home is His call, and He is not stingy. We lean hopeful, as the inclusivist reading does, while holding that anyone saved is saved by Him alone.

Eternal life is a gift, and those who finally refuse the Life perish. They are not kept alive forever to suffer. And a way so wide it no longer needs Jesus is not the way He described.

How It Gets Used As A Weapon

To end conversations with people of other faiths. To tell a grieving family where their mother is. To treat neighbors as targets instead of people. To make a church the gatekeeper instead of Jesus.

How Jesus Used It

At a dinner table, to a friend who admitted he was lost, hours after washing His betrayer's feet. Arrogance walks the other direction.

If You Are Grieving Someone

If someone you love died without saying the words you hoped to hear, please hear this. You do not know everything that passed between them and God, and neither do we. Jesus does, and He is kinder than the people who used this verse on you.

Bring that grief to Him. If you would like someone to pray with you, we would be honored to.

Where This Lands

Come Home Now

Thomas asked for directions and Jesus gave him Himself. That is still the answer. The way to the Father is not a technique, the truth about God is not an argument to win, and the life you were made for does not wait for your funeral.

The Father's house has room, and in John 14 the Father and the Son come to make their home with anyone who loves Jesus. The door is open because the Way walked out to meet us.

The Whole Thing In One Line

Jesus answered a lost disciple by pointing to Himself: He is the only way to the Father, the truth about what God is like, and the life of God given now, and the Father comes to make His home with anyone who loves Him.

Not sure where you are headed? Send it in, and someone at Sound of Heaven will pray and walk through it with you.

Questions People Ask

Questions About John 14:6

What does I am the way the truth and the life mean?

It means Jesus is Himself the way to the Father, not a teacher pointing at a distant route. He said it in John 14:6 to Thomas, who admitted the disciples did not know where Jesus was going. Jesus is the way because He brings us to the Father, the truth because He shows what God is really like, and the life because He gives the life of God now, and the Father makes His home with those who love Him.

Who was Jesus talking to in John 14:6?

He was speaking to Thomas, at the table on the night before the crucifixion. Judas had just left, Jesus had said He was going where they could not follow yet, and Thomas said they did not know where He was going, so how could they know the way. John 14:6 answers that honest, frightened question from one of His closest friends. It was not a line aimed at outsiders.

Does John 14:6 mean only Christians go to heaven?

It says no one comes to the Father except through Jesus, so Jesus is the only way. Christians differ on how far His reach extends. Some believe only those who consciously trust Him in this life are saved. Others believe His saving work can reach people who never clearly heard His name. We hold that Jesus alone saves, that who He brings home is His call, and that those who finally refuse eternal life perish rather than suffer forever.

What does my Father's house has many rooms mean?

John 14:2 is usually read as mansions in heaven after death, but John uses the same Greek word, mone, only once more. In John 14:23 Jesus says the Father and the Son will come and make their home with the one who loves Him. The place Jesus prepared through the cross and resurrection is a dwelling with the Father, and in John's telling the Father comes to make it with us now.

Why were early Christians called the Way?

Acts uses the Way as the earliest name for the followers of Jesus, as in Acts 9:2, where Saul hunted anyone who belonged to the Way. The name echoes John 14:6 and Isaiah 40:3, the prepare the way verse all four Gospels tie to John the Baptist. For the first believers it meant faith was a road walked with a Person, in community, rather than a set of ideas to agree with.
