Bible Study · The Title And What It Carries

Is Jesus The Son Of God? More Than A Title

Israel wore the title. Kings wore it. Caesar stamped it on his coins. The Gospels take the same words and pour something into them nobody else could hold.

The Short Answer

Yes, And In A Way Nobody Else Is

Straight Answer

Is Jesus the Son of God? Yes. He is the eternal Son, one with the Father, fully God and fully human in one Person, and He did not become the Son at some point in time.

The phrase itself was not new. What was new is who wore it. The Old Testament used it for Israel and its king, Rome used it for Caesar, and the Gospels use it for someone who shares the Father's own life.

That is the Sound of Heaven position and the historic faith of the church. Here is why, with the people who disagree taken seriously.

Before Bethlehem

Who Else Was Called God's Son

Start with something a lot of sermons skip. The words "son of God" do not, by themselves, prove anybody is divine. The Old Testament gives it to people who were not God.

A nation · Exodus 4:22

Moses is told to say to Pharaoh, “Thus says the LORD, Israel is my firstborn son.” The whole people is God's son, loved, claimed and about to be rescued.

A king · 2 Samuel 7:14

God promises David about his heir, “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son.” The king of Israel stands in for the nation before God.

A coronation · Psalm 2:7

“You are my Son; today I have begotten you.” This is enthronement language. The day a king is crowned, God declares him His son.

Others · Job, Luke, Matthew

The heavenly court in Job 1:6, Adam in Luke 3:38 and the peacemakers in Matthew 5:9. Son language describes belonging and likeness, not biology.

So in a first century Jewish ear, calling someone God's son meant, at minimum, "God's chosen one, God's king." That is why Peter can put the title Christ and Son of God side by side, and why the long hope for the son of David runs straight into this language. The heavenly beings called sons of God have a story of their own, which we cover in the sons of God in Genesis 6.

Takeaway

The title started as royal and covenant language. If the Gospels only meant that, Jesus would be a very good king. They mean that and a great deal more, and the more is where the argument lives.

The Roman Background

Caesar Had The Title On His Coins

There is a second background, and anyone living under Rome would have felt it in their pockets. After Julius Caesar was declared a god by the Roman state, his adopted heir Octavian, later Augustus, styled himself divi filius, son of the deified one. It went on the money.

A gold coin of Augustus in the collection at Lawrence University reads, in the catalogue's translation, “Caesar Augustus, son of a god (the Divine Julius Caesar), father of the country.”

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”

Mark 1:1
Rome's Son Of A God

A man made divine by decree of the Senate, whose son claimed the title to secure his power. Peace kept by legions and crosses.

Mark's Son Of God

A man who heals, forgives, and dies on one of those Roman crosses. And the first human being in Mark to confess Him by that title is a Roman soldier.

That soldier is the centurion in Mark 15:39. “Truly this man was the Son of God!” Mark opens with the title and closes the crucifixion with it, and the man who says it works for Caesar.

Being Careful With The Evidence

Two honest notes. Some early manuscripts of Mark 1:1 do not include the words "the Son of God," so scholars debate whether they were original. And the Greek of 15:39 has no article, so it can be read "a son of God," as the ESV footnote allows. Neither changes the picture. A Roman using Rome's own language about a crucified Jew is the point either way. For a related piece, see what Jesus meant by you are gods.

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."2 Corinthians 9:7

The Gospels

How The Title Gets Filled With More

If Son of God only meant "Israel's rightful king," nobody would have picked up stones.

The Jordan · Mark 1:11
The Father Names Him

The voice says, "You are my beloved Son." That echoes Psalm 2, but the Son is not being crowned into something new. We work through why in why Jesus was baptized.

Caesarea Philippi · Matthew 16:16
Peter Says It Out Loud

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus says flesh and blood did not reveal this to Peter. The Father did. Messiah and Son stand together.

A Sabbath In Jerusalem · John 5:18
His Own Father

His opponents understood exactly what He meant. He “was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.” No king of Judah had ever been heard that way.

The Feast Of Dedication · John 10:30 to 33
One With The Father

“I and the Father are one.” They reach for stones, and they say why: “because you, being a man, make yourself God.”

After Easter · Romans 1:4
Declared With Power

He was “declared to be the Son of God in power” by the resurrection. Declared, not made. The resurrection shows publicly what was already true.

The question of whether Jesus claimed to be God is its own study, and we lay out the full case in did Jesus claim to be God. The "I am" sayings in John push the same direction, which we trace in the I Am statements. Jesus' favorite title for Himself, Son of Man, is not the opposite of this one, and Son of Man meaning shows why.

“It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.”

John 10:33
One Greek Word

Only Son, Not A Son Who Started

Older English Bibles say "only begotten Son," which sounds like there was a moment when the Son was produced, which is exactly what Jehovah's Witnesses teach and exactly what the church rejects. The Greek word behind it is worth a look.

GreekMonogenesμονογενη&sfgr;John 1:14, 18 · 3:16, 18
Built from

Monos, only, and genos, kind or class. It was long assumed to come from the verb for begetting, and that is where "only begotten" came from.

Plain meaning

Only, unique, one of a kind. Luke 7:12 uses it for the widow's only son at Nain.

The test case

Hebrews 11:17 calls Isaac Abraham's monogenes, though Abraham also fathered Ishmael. Isaac is the unique son of the promise, not the only child ever born.

John 1:18

Many of the earliest Greek manuscripts read monogenes theos, the only God, who is at the Father's side and has made Him known. The unique one is Himself God.

That fits what Bible teacher Marg Mowczko sums up in her study of the word: “Monogenēs means 'one of a kind'”. We cover the English word in more depth in begotten meaning.

So why does the Nicene Creed still say begotten? Because it means something careful by it. The Creed confesses the Son “born of the Father before all ages” and “begotten, not made”. Many English versions render it "eternally begotten of the Father." The Son comes from the Father the way light comes from a fire, and there was never a fire without its light.

Where We Stand, Plainly

Jesus is the eternal Son of God. He did not begin at Bethlehem, at the Jordan or at the empty tomb. He is one God with the Father and the Holy Spirit, three distinct Persons, each fully God, and in the incarnation He became fully human without ceasing to be fully God. One Person, two natures.

We reject adoptionism, the idea that a good man was promoted to Son of God at his baptism or resurrection. The Psalm 2 "today" language describes His public enthronement, and Romans 1:4 says declared, not made.

We also reject modalism, the idea that Father and Son are one Person switching masks. The Son prays to the Father, is sent by the Father and returns to the Father. You cannot be sent by yourself. For the whole doctrine, see the Trinity in the Bible.

What does monogenes most naturally mean in John 3:16?

The first son God produced before creation
The only, unique Son, one of a kind
A son adopted into divine status

The word describes uniqueness, not a birth event. Hebrews 11:17 uses it for Isaac, who was not Abraham's only child but was his one son of promise.

Taking Disagreement Seriously

Three Honest Objections, Answered

People who say no here are usually not being difficult, and many love God deeply. Here is each view as its own teachers put it, then where we think it goes wrong.

Jehovah's Witnesses: The First Creation

Their own teaching page says Son of God “acknowledges that God is the Creator, or Source, of all life, including that of Jesus,” and that Jesus is “the firstborn of all creation.” Their translation renders John 1:1 “the Word was a god.” Our answer: firstborn in Scripture can mean rank, as when God says of David in Psalm 89:27, “I will make him the firstborn.” John 1:3 says all things were made through the Word, which leaves nothing He could have been made from. And John, a strict monotheist, closes with Thomas saying “My Lord and my God!” A lesser god beside God would be a second god, which is the one thing John would never write.

Islam: God Has No Son

Muslims honor Jesus as prophet and Messiah and affirm His virgin birth. The Quran says of God, “He has never had offspring, nor was He born” (112:3). Our answer starts with agreement. God did not father a child through a wife, and Christians never taught that. Son is not biology here any more than it was for Israel. The real disagreement is whether the one God can be one in a way that includes eternal love, Father and Son and Spirit, before anything was made. We believe Jesus shows that He is.

Judaism: God Is Not A Man

The Shema says the LORD is one (Deuteronomy 6:4), Numbers 23:19 says God is not a man, and in the Hebrew Bible son of God meant Israel or its king. Our answer: the first people who worshiped Jesus were Jews who kept the Shema. Paul, a Pharisee, does not drop it. He folds Jesus inside it in 1 Corinthians 8:6, one God the Father and one Lord Jesus Christ. And the church has a shameful record of using this question as a weapon against Jewish neighbors. That was wrong, and it was never the way of the Son it claimed to defend.

Takeaway

All three views agree God is one. So do we. The question is what kind of one, and Christians answer by looking at Jesus rather than by starting with a definition and making Him fit it.

Where This Lands

The Son Shows You The Father

This changes what you think God is like. If Jesus is only a very good king God adopted, then God is still somewhere behind Him, and you are left guessing about the parts of God you cannot see. If Jesus is the eternal Son, then what you see in Him is what the Father is. The way He touched lepers. The way He ate with people the religious crowd avoided. The way He forgave from a Roman cross. John 1:18 says the only Son has made the Father known, and He did not leave anything out.

Israel was called to be God's son and struggled. The kings were called to be God's sons and failed. Jesus is the Son they could not be, and because of Him we are brought into the family as sons and daughters, not by nature as He is, but by grace.

If you want to see this lived out, you can plan a visit to Sound of Heaven in Deer Park, or if this question is stirring something harder in you, let us pray with you. For more, read about the transfiguration, where the Father says it again, and Jesus as the Word.

The Whole Thing In One Line

Israel, its kings and Caesar all carried the title Son of God, but only Jesus carries it as the eternal, one of a kind Son who shares the Father's life, shows us exactly who God is, and brings us into the family.

Questions People Ask

Questions About Jesus As The Son Of God

Is Jesus the Son of God according to the Bible?

Yes. The Father calls Him "my beloved Son" at His baptism, Peter confesses Him as "the Son of the living God" in Matthew 16:16, and John writes his Gospel so readers will believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. John 5:18 and 10:33 show His opponents understood the claim as equality with God. Romans 1:4 says the resurrection declared Him the Son of God in power. The church confesses Him as the eternal Son, fully God and fully human.

What does Son of God mean in the Old Testament?

It was covenant and royal language. Exodus 4:22 calls Israel God's firstborn son. In 2 Samuel 7:14 God promises David's heir, "I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son," and Psalm 2:7 uses the same idea at a king's coronation. Adam, the heavenly court in Job and the peacemakers are also called sons of God. The phrase signals belonging and chosen status, which is why the Gospels have to show more to prove Jesus is divine.

What does only begotten Son mean?

It translates the Greek monogenes, which means only or unique, one of a kind. It does not mean Jesus was produced at a point in time. Hebrews 11:17 uses the same word for Isaac, who was not Abraham's only child but his unique son of promise. When the Nicene Creed says the Son is begotten, it adds "begotten, not made" and "before all ages," meaning an eternal relationship with the Father, with no beginning.

Did Jesus ever call himself the Son of God?

Yes. In John 10:36 He asks why He is accused of blasphemy "because I said, 'I am the Son of God.'" He regularly calls God "my Father" in a way His hearers took as a claim to equality with God. At His trial in Mark 14, the high priest asks whether He is the Christ, the Son of the Blessed, and Jesus answers, "I am." He more often called Himself the Son of Man, a title that points in the same direction.

Do Jehovah's Witnesses believe Jesus is the Son of God?

They use the title, but they mean something different. Their teaching says Jesus was the first thing God created, a spirit creature before His human birth, and their translation renders John 1:1 as "the Word was a god." Historic Christianity holds that the Son is uncreated and eternal, because John 1:3 says all things were made through Him, and John closes with Thomas calling Jesus "My Lord and my God." The disagreement is about whether the Son had a beginning.
