The Mercy Definition Bible Readers Need

Two halves. Not giving somebody the harm they had coming, and actively helping somebody in trouble. Scripture never separates them.

The Short Answer

The Definition

Straight Answer

The mercy definition Bible readers need has two halves. Mercy is not giving somebody the harm they had coming, and it is also actively helping somebody in trouble. Scripture uses it both ways and does not separate them.

The Hebrew behind most of it is chesed, loyal covenant love, which appears around 250 times. The Greek is eleos. Neither word is primarily about feeling sorry for someone.

The usual shorthand, that grace is getting what you do not deserve and mercy is not getting what you do, is half right and it leaves out the larger half.

The Word

Chesed And What It Carries

HebrewchesedAbout 250 Uses
Hard to translate

English versions render it mercy, lovingkindness, steadfast love, loyal love and unfailing love. No single word carries it, which is itself informative.

It is covenant loyalty

The core is commitment that holds when the other party has given you every reason to walk. Not warmth, and not leniency. Staying.

Exodus 34:6

God's own self-description: abounding in chesed and faithfulness. It is the word He reaches for first when asked who He is.

Psalm 136

Twenty-six verses, each ending with His chesed endures forever. The repetition is the argument, and it is the most insistent psalm in the book.

Takeaway

The Greek Old Testament usually translates chesed with eleos, which is why the New Testament word for mercy arrives already loaded with covenant loyalty rather than pity.

The Two Halves

Withholding And Giving

Mercy As Withholding

Lamentations 3:22. Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed. Psalm 103:10. He does not treat us as our sins deserve. This half everybody knows.

Mercy As Action

Luke 10:37. Mikeal Parsons notes that “the Samaritan's act of compassion is construed by the lawyer as showing mercy”. Mercy as a verb with a bill attached.

Micah 6:8

Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly. Love is what you do with mercy, which means it is something you carry toward people rather than only receive.

Matthew 9:13

I desire mercy, not sacrifice, quoting Hosea. Jesus says it twice in Matthew, both times to religious people objecting to who He is eating with.

James 2:13

Judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment. A blunt sentence with no qualifier.

Matthew 5:7

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. The beatitude makes the two directions one thing rather than two.

Manage My Giving

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."2 Corinthians 9:7

Saying It Plainly

The Parable Nobody Wants

Matthew 18 has the hardest thing Jesus ever said about mercy, and it gets preached selectively.

A servant owes an unpayable amount. The king cancels it outright. The servant walks out, finds a man who owes him a trivial sum, and has him thrown in prison. The king reverses the cancellation.

Where We Stand, Plainly

Jesus ends it in verse 35: this is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart. That is not a soft ending and we are not going to file the edges off it.

The point is not that God's mercy is conditional in the sense of being earned. It is that mercy received and not passed on was never actually received. A person who understood what was cancelled cannot do what the servant does. The behaviour reveals that the forgiveness never went in.

Which means the uncomfortable diagnostic is not how grateful you feel. It is how you treat somebody who owes you something. A church full of people who can talk fluently about grace and cannot let a small offence go has a problem the vocabulary is hiding.

And one balance, because mercy gets misused in the other direction. Mercy is not the same as pretending nothing happened, and it does not require staying in reach of somebody dangerous. Joseph forgives his brothers and also tests them first. Paul forgives and still names Alexander in writing. Mercy releases a debt. It does not hand back the keys.

What does Matthew 18 say about the unforgiving servant?

He is commended for collecting what he was owed
The king reverses the cancellation, and Jesus applies it directly to the listener
The parable ends without resolution

Verse 35 applies it explicitly. The point is not that mercy is earned but that mercy received and not passed on was never really received, because somebody who grasped the size of the cancellation could not act that way.

In Practice

The Shortest Prayer In The Bible

The word turns up most often in Scripture in one short sentence, said by people with nothing to bring.

“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

Luke 18:13
Blind Bartimaeus

Mark 10:47. Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. The crowd tells him to be quiet and he shouts louder, which is the whole lesson.

The Canaanite woman

Matthew 15:22. Have mercy on me, Lord. She is a foreigner with no covenant claim, and she is the one Jesus commends for great faith.

The ten with leprosy

Luke 17:13. Jesus, Master, have pity on us. Ten ask, ten are healed, and one comes back, and the one who returns is a Samaritan.

What they share

Nobody in that list has standing. Mercy is what you ask for when the thing you have no claim to is the thing you need.

Where This Lands

Every Morning

There is a line in Lamentations that decides the whole subject, and the setting is what makes it.

The book is a funeral poem over a destroyed Jerusalem. The writer has watched a siege, famine and the temple burn, and he is not consoling himself with anything easy. Chapter 3 describes God as a bear lying in wait.

And in the middle of that, verses 22 and 23: because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning.

Every morning is the operative phrase, and it is written by a man in ruins. Not mercy that arrived once, and not mercy that runs out with repeated use. A fresh supply on a schedule, available tomorrow, to somebody who has already used all of today's.

For related ground, see grace, forgiveness, forgiving seventy times seven, the attributes of God, agape love, righteousness and redemption.

The Whole Thing In One Line

Chesed is covenant loyalty rather than pity, mercy means both withholding deserved harm and actively helping somebody in trouble, Matthew 18 says mercy not passed on was never received, and Lamentations says the supply is new every morning.

If You Are Finding It Hard To Let Something Go

Being told to forgive by somebody who does not know what happened is not help. Send it in and somebody at Sound of Heaven will pray over it with you.

Questions People Ask

Questions About Mercy

What is the mercy definition bible readers should use?

Two things at once. Not giving somebody the harm they had coming, and actively helping somebody in trouble. Scripture uses it both ways without separating them. The Hebrew behind most of it is chesed, loyal covenant love, appearing around 250 times, and the Greek is eleos. Neither word is primarily about feeling sorry for somebody.

What does chesed mean?

Loyal covenant love, and English has no single word for it. Translations render it mercy, lovingkindness, steadfast love and unfailing love. The core is commitment that holds when the other party has given you every reason to walk away. Exodus 34:6 has God describe Himself as abounding in it, and Psalm 136 repeats that it endures forever twenty-six times.

What is the difference between mercy and grace?

The usual shorthand is that grace is getting what you do not deserve and mercy is not getting what you do. That is half right. It captures the withholding side and leaves out the larger half, which is mercy as action. Luke 10:37 calls the Samaritan the one who had mercy, describing a man who bandaged a stranger and paid an innkeeper.

What does Matthew 18 teach about mercy?

A servant has an unpayable debt cancelled, then jails a man over a trivial sum, and the king reverses the cancellation. Verse 35 applies it directly to the listener. The point is not that mercy is earned but that mercy received and not passed on was never really received, because somebody who grasped the size of the cancellation could not act that way.

Does mercy mean pretending nothing happened?

No. Mercy releases a debt without handing back the keys. Joseph forgives his brothers and tests them first. Paul forgives and still names Alexander in writing. Mercy does not require staying in reach of somebody dangerous, and treating those as the same thing has kept people in situations Scripture never asked them to stay in.
