Principalities And Powers: Real, And Already Disarmed

Paul's words for the forces behind the world's darkness describe something real. They do not describe a hidden army you have to map and fear. Here is what the words mean and why the cross settles it.

The Short Answer

Real Opposition, Already Beaten

Straight Answer

So, what are principalities and powers? They are Paul's names for the forces of opposition, deception and domination that work through systems, ideologies, rulers and structures, and Colossians 2:15 says Jesus has already disarmed them.

At Sound of Heaven we do not teach them as a chain of command of personal demonic beings assigned to cities and nations. We teach them as real powers, real in their effects, and defeated at the cross.

The phrase comes from the King James Version, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers” (Ephesians 6:12). Many first heard it in a sermon that made the invisible world sound crowded and dangerous. Paul wrote it to do the opposite.

The Vocabulary

The Words Paul Uses

Paul uses a cluster of words for these forces, and he likes to pile them up. Older English Bibles say principalities and powers. Newer ones say rulers and authorities. Same Greek, different centuries of English.

GreekArchēἀρχήRulers
Basic sense

A beginning or first place, and from there whoever holds first place: a ruler, a magistrate, a rule.

Plural

Archai. The King James says principalities. The ESV says rulers.

On earth too

In Luke 12:11 Jesus warns that His followers will be brought before synagogues and the archai and exousiai, meaning local courts and officials.

GreekExousiaἐξουσίαAuthorities
Basic sense

Authority, the right to act, power delegated within a sphere.

Plural

Exousiai. The King James says powers. The ESV says authorities.

On earth too

Titus 3:1 tells believers to be submissive to archai and exousiai, rulers and authorities, the civic officials of their day.

Two more words fill out the picture. Dynameis means powers or forces, and it shows up in Ephesians 1:21 and Romans 8:38. Kosmokratores, world rulers, appears only once in the New Testament, in Ephesians 6:12, where the ESV renders it “the cosmic powers over this present darkness.”

Ephesians 1:21 · Above them all

The risen Christ is seated “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named.”

Ephesians 3:10 · Watching the church

God's wisdom is made known “to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places” through the church itself.

Ephesians 6:12 · The real struggle

Not flesh and blood, but rulers, authorities, cosmic powers over this present darkness and spiritual forces of evil.

Colossians 1:16 · Made by Him

Thrones, dominions, rulers and authorities were all created through Christ and for Him.

Colossians 2:15 · Disarmed

At the cross He “disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame.”

Romans 8:38 to 39 · Powerless to separate

Neither angels nor rulers nor powers can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Takeaway

Paul's words for the powers are his world's ordinary words for offices that rule, stretched to cover the forces behind them. Not once does he tell you to fear them.

Rulers With Names

Power Has An Outside And An Inside

The same words that describe powers “in the heavenly places” describe local courts in Luke and civic officials in Titus. Paul's readers did not draw a clean line between the throne in Rome and the spirit behind it. Power had an outside you could see and an inside you could feel.

“None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”

1 Corinthians 2:8 · ESV

Who crucified Jesus? On one level we know the names: Caiaphas the high priest, Pontius Pilate the governor, a squad of soldiers following orders. Yet something bigger than those men was at work. A temple system protecting itself. An empire that kept the peace by nailing people to wood. A crowd turned in a morning. All of it was real.

That is what principalities and powers look like on the ground. Pride that outlives the people who hold it. Greed built into a business model. A lie repeated until a whole culture believes it. You cannot handcuff any of these. The struggle is not against flesh and blood.

Notice the time stamp too. Paul says the rulers of this age are “doomed to pass away” (1 Corinthians 2:6). He wrote within a generation of the end of the age, when the temple order fell in AD 70. The powers that crucified Jesus did not outlast the covenant transition He brought in.

Takeaway

The powers are not a separate world floating above ours. They are the spirit of the systems we live in, working through people without being people.

Two Readings

A Hierarchy Of Spirits, Or Something Else?

Most Christians through history have read these verses as describing personal spiritual beings. That view deserves its strongest form.

The Traditional View

Principalities and powers are ranks of fallen angels under Satan, organized like an army. Daniel 10 speaks of a prince of the kingdom of Persia resisting an angelic messenger, which suggests spirits over nations. Paul's lists read like ranks, Colossians 1:16 counts them among things invisible, and Ephesians 6:12 puts the struggle in the heavenly places.

How We Read It

Paul's words are the ordinary vocabulary of rule. He piles them into lists to say one thing: whatever power you can name, Christ is above it. Daniel 10 is apocalyptic, a vision in which nations have heavenly counterparts. Scripture never gives the powers names, personalities, assigned cities or a map.

Where We Stand, Plainly

At Sound of Heaven we do not teach principalities and powers as a literal hierarchy of personal demonic beings, and we do not teach territorial spirits ruling over cities and nations. We teach them as real powers of opposition, deception and oppression that work through systems, ideologies, rulers and structures. That is our position, and we hold it on purpose. It fits how we read Satan as the accuser and adversary, and demons as forces of deception, trauma, chaos and oppression, which we trace in are demons fallen angels.

We are not alone in reading Paul this way. New Testament scholar Walter Wink gave a trilogy of books to these words. In Naming the Powers he wrote, “I will argue that the ‘principalities and powers’ are the inner and outer aspects of any given manifestation of power.” Of the inner side he said, “As the inner aspect they are the spirituality of institutions, the ‘within’ of corporate structures and systems, the inner essence of outer organizations of power.” We do not follow Wink on everything, but here he saw what the text says.

It cuts the other way too. This does not make evil smaller or imaginary. A culture of fear or contempt is no less real than a creature with horns. It is harder to see, and it is exactly what Jesus came to break.

In Luke 12:11 and Titus 3:1, who are the rulers and authorities, the archai and exousiai?

Ranks of fallen angels over regions
Human officials: courts, magistrates and governments
Angels assigned to guard local churches

In both verses the words describe ordinary human authorities. Paul uses the same vocabulary in Ephesians and Colossians, which is one reason we read the powers as forces working through rulers and structures, not as a separate chain of spirit beings.

Mapping The Heavens

Where The Hierarchy Idea Came From

A detailed chain of command in the spirit world did not come from Paul. It grew over centuries.

Daniel 10 · Apocalyptic Vision
A Prince Of Persia

A heavenly messenger is resisted by the prince of Persia and helped by Michael. It is vision language, not a strategy.

First Century · Paul's Letters
Lists, Not Ranks

Paul lists rulers, authorities, powers and dominions to say Christ is above all of them. He never ranks them, names them or sends anyone to fight them one by one.

Around AD 500 · Later Tradition
Nine Orders Of Angels

A writer known as Pseudo-Dionysius arranges angels into nine orders in three tiers, borrowing Paul's words as rank names. Influential, but later tradition, not Scripture.

1990s · A Modern Movement
Strategic-Level Spiritual Warfare

A movement associated with C. Peter Wagner teaches that demonic spirits are assigned to territories, and that believers should identify them through spiritual mapping and pull them down in targeted prayer.

That movement deserves a gentle but clear answer, because many sincere people prayed hard inside it. A 2020 theological assessment in the journal Mediator notes that it peaked in the 1990s and then began to wane.

Here is where it goes wrong. The New Testament never tells believers to discover the name of a regional spirit or research a city's spiritual history, and never makes the gospel wait on a campaign in the heavens. Paul walked into Ephesus, a city known for magic, and did none of it. He reasoned daily in the hall of Tyrannus for two years (Acts 19:9 to 10), and people who had practiced magic burned their own books (Acts 19:19). Truth did the work.

It also lays a weight on believers Jesus never gave them. If revival depends on defeating a spirit no one can see, every setback becomes proof you prayed wrong. And naming the spirit over a neighborhood tends to land on the people who live there. That is not discernment. It is accusation wearing church clothes.

The same caution applies to the claim that spirits watch and report on you, answered in monitoring spirits, and to binding as a prayer technique, covered in what binding and loosing means.

The Cross

Already Disarmed

“by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”

Colossians 2:14 to 15 · ESV

Paul's picture is a victory parade. Paul says the cross was that parade, the defeated led through the streets for all to see. The place where the powers looked strongest, with religion, empire and the mob agreeing to kill Jesus, is the place they were exposed and stripped. The record of debt, the accuser's favorite weapon, was nailed to the same wood. The verb is past tense. He disarmed them.

That changes our whole posture. We do not fight toward victory. We stand in it. That is why the armor in Ephesians 6 is about standing, and why its pieces are truth, righteousness, peace and faith. We walk through it in the armor of God and the shield of faith. And Ephesians 3:10 says the church shows the powers God's wisdom simply by being the church, people of every background living as one family under Jesus.

Tell The Truth

Deception is the powers' native language. Name the lie at work in your home or heart, and answer it with what Jesus shows you about the Father.

Refuse The Lie, Not The Person

Not flesh and blood means the people in front of you are not the enemy. They are held by the same forces you are.

Pray From Victory

Pray like someone the cross already rescued, and expect the Spirit's gifts to work. You do not need a spirit's name or a formula.

Live Against The Grain

Generosity where the system runs on greed, honesty where it runs on spin. Each of those is spiritual warfare in Paul's sense.

If You Were Taught To Be Afraid

Some of you were taught that a spirit was over your family, your town or your mind. Hear this plainly: nothing in all creation can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:39). The powers were disarmed long before you were born.

If fear has settled in, talk with someone you trust, and you can ask us to pray with you. There is more on walking free in what deliverance is.

Where This Lands

Seated Above, Sent Among

Ephesians begins with Jesus raised and seated far above every rule and authority and power and dominion, and then says the Father seated us with Him in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). That is where you sit right now. The Kingdom of God is present and active, and the powers that once ran the world on fear and accusation are defeated rulers in a Kingdom that is not theirs.

So we do not wait for Jesus to win, and we do not map the sky. We live free inside systems that still run on old lies, telling the truth and loving our neighbors.

The Whole Thing In One Line

Principalities and powers are the real forces of deception and domination working through the world's rulers and systems, and Jesus disarmed them at the cross, so we stand in His victory instead of living in fear of them.

Questions People Ask

Questions About Principalities And Powers

What are principalities and powers in the Bible?

Principalities and powers is the King James phrase for Paul's Greek words archai and exousiai, rulers and authorities. Paul uses them for the forces of opposition, deception and domination working behind rulers, systems and structures. At Sound of Heaven we teach them as real powers working through the world's systems rather than a hierarchy of personal demons, and Colossians 2:15 says Jesus has already disarmed them at the cross.

What does Ephesians 6:12 mean?

Ephesians 6:12 says our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against rulers, authorities, cosmic powers over this present darkness and spiritual forces of evil. Paul means the deepest battle is not with the person in front of you. It is with the lies and fear that hold people and systems. That is why the armor that follows is truth, righteousness, peace and faith, and why the command is to stand. The victory has already been won at the cross.

Are principalities and powers demons or fallen angels?

Many Christians read them as ranks of fallen angels under Satan, a view with a long history. We read Paul differently. His words are the ordinary vocabulary of rule, used for local officials in Luke 12:11 and civic authorities in Titus 3:1, and he never gives the powers names or personalities. We teach them as forces of opposition and deception working through systems and people, real in their effects.

What are territorial spirits?

Territorial spirits are demonic beings believed to rule over particular cities, regions or nations. The idea became popular in the 1990s through strategic-level spiritual warfare and spiritual mapping, which teach believers to identify these spirits and pull them down in targeted prayer. The New Testament never teaches believers to research or name a regional spirit, and Paul reached Ephesus by teaching the truth daily. We do not teach territorial spirits.

How did Jesus disarm the rulers and authorities?

Colossians 2:15 says that at the cross Jesus disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame by triumphing over them. The picture is a victory parade. Religion, empire and the crowd joined forces to kill Him, and by raising Him God exposed their verdict as a lie. That is why believers do not fight for victory. We stand in the one Jesus already won.
