Putting God First: A Center, Not A Ranking

It was never meant to be a list with God at the top and your family somewhere under the church calendar. It is a center that everything else turns around, and it comes with your neighbor attached.

The Short Answer

Whole Heart, Not Top Slot

Straight Answer

Putting God first means letting God, as Jesus shows Him to us, be the center your whole life is arranged around. It is a center, not a ranking.

The Bible never hands you a list that says God, then family, then church, then work. It says love God with everything you are, and love your neighbor as yourself, and Jesus refused to pull those two apart.

That changes how the phrase lands. Putting God first is not a contest where your kids, your health and your marriage lose to the next church event. It is the thing that makes you better at loving all of them.

Deuteronomy 6

Where The Idea Starts

If you want to know what putting God first meant to the people who first heard it, start with the words every observant Jewish family said morning and evening. Moses told them to talk about these words when they sat at home, walked along the road, lay down and got up (Deuteronomy 6:7).

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”

Deuteronomy 6:4 to 5 · NIV

This is not a schedule. It does not assign God a time slot or a percentage. It asks for the whole person, so no part of you sits outside it.

HebrewShemaשָׁמַעThe First Word
Strong's gloss

Strong's defines shama as to hear intelligently, often with the implication of attention and obedience.

How it is rendered

The King James tradition translates it hear, listen, give ear, obey, understand and more. Hearing that does nothing was not considered hearing.

Why it matters

The command to love God opens with a command to listen. Putting God first begins with attention before it ever becomes activity.

Jewish teachers noticed the order of it too. The Mishnah, compiled around AD 200, records a second-century rabbi explaining why the Shema is said before the passage full of commands. His answer was so that a person would “first accept upon himself the yoke of the kingdom of Heaven” and only then the yoke of the commandments.

That is later rabbinic reading, not Scripture, but it is sharp. Relationship first, and obedience growing out of it.

Saying It Plainly

God Is Not Rung Number One

Many of us grew up with a ranking. God first, family second, church third, work fourth, and you somewhere at the bottom if you made the list at all. Its real strength is that it tells you your job is not your god. That part is right.

The Ladder

God, family, church, work. Anything spent on a lower rung is time stolen from a higher one, and God competes with your kids for your hours.

The Center

God at the middle, and family, work, rest and church all arranged around Him. Loving your kids well is one of the ways you love Him.

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.”

Exodus 20:2 to 3 · NIV

Read the first commandment with the sentence in front of it. God introduces Himself as the one who set them free, then says no other gods. The NIV footnote offers besides me as another way to read before me. Either way, the issue is rival gods, not a ranking of good things. Your daughter is not a rival god. Your job is not one either, until it starts demanding what only God should get.

Where We Stand, Plainly

At Sound of Heaven we believe the ladder picture is wrong, and it has hurt people. It turns God into one more demand on your calendar, and then it pits Him against the people He gave you to love. It has been used to guilt tired parents into another night away from home, and it has produced pastors' kids who grew up believing God was the reason their dad was never around.

We also refuse the opposite error. Some people hear this and decide nothing needs to change, that God is somehow already central because they feel fine. Jesus did say that where your treasure is, your heart will be also. If your money, your mornings and your worry all orbit something else, that something is functioning as your god, whatever you call it.

What comes right before “You shall have no other gods before me” in Exodus 20?

A warning that God will punish anyone who ranks Him second
God naming Himself as the one who brought them out of slavery
A list of priorities for Israel's families

Exodus 20:2 comes first: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. The command rests on rescue. God asks to be central because He is the one who set them free, not because He needs the top rung.

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."2 Corinthians 9:7

Mark 12

The First Command Comes With A Second

When a teacher of the law asked Jesus which commandment was most important, He quoted the Shema. Then He kept going, even though nobody had asked for a second one.

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Mark 12:29 to 31 · NIV

Jesus answers a question about first place by joining two commands at the hip. You cannot put God first in a way that leaves people behind, because loving people is part of what putting Him first means. John says it with no room to wriggle: “whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen” (1 John 4:20). We walked through that pairing in more detail in the great commandment.

Jesus is the clearest picture of the Father we have, and He never once treated devotion to God as a reason to neglect a human being.

Mark 7:9 to 13 · Corban

Some declared money devoted to God so they would not have to support their aging parents. Jesus said, “Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition.” Religion used as a way out of family duty got His sharpest words.

1 Timothy 5:8 · Your Household

Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, especially their own household, has denied the faith. Caring for your family is not a distraction from faith. It is faith.

Mark 2:27 · Rest

“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” God's own rhythms were designed for human good. Burning your body out for ministry was never the assignment.

Luke 5:16 · Withdrawal

“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” With crowds waiting, He stepped away. Putting God first sometimes means doing less, not more.

If This Touches Something Tender

Some people reading this gave years to church activity while a marriage thinned out or their health quietly broke down, and they were told it was what putting God first required. If that is you, hear this plainly: God was not asking you to sacrifice the people He gave you, or the body He gave you.

There is no shame in stepping back to heal, to rest, or to come home for dinner. That is not backsliding. If you want someone to talk it through with, our prayer team would count it a privilege.

Matthew 6:33

Seek First, Without The Sales Pitch

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Matthew 6:33 · NIV

This is the verse most people reach for here, and Jesus said it to ordinary people worried about food and clothes. “All these things” are the things listed two verses earlier: what to eat, what to drink, what to wear. We worked through the whole paragraph in seek first the kingdom of God, so here are just two points.

First, the Kingdom is not somewhere far off that you are waiting to reach. Jesus announced that it had come near, and it is God's reign through Him, established and active now. Seeking it first means living today under a reign already in force.

Second, the verse is not a transaction. Some teachers promise that if you put God first, and especially if you put Him first in the offering, He will make you rich. That is wrong. It takes a verse about trusting the Father instead of chasing things and turns it into a method for getting more things. We say plainly in tithes and offerings that generosity flows from grace, never from a guilt formula or a promised return.

Takeaway

God does promise that the Father knows what you need. He does not promise a bigger house as payment for your devotion. Putting Him first is how you get free of the fear of not having enough, not how you get more.

What It Looks Like

Putting God First On A Tuesday

A center shows up in ordinary places. None of these earn anything. They just let the middle of your life be the middle.

Listen Before You Run

Shema starts with hearing. A few quiet minutes with Scripture and honest prayer before the phone takes over does more than an hour of guilty catching up later. Colossians 3:17 calls you to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Let Your Family Count As Worship

Driving to practice, sitting with an aging parent, making dinner for a tired spouse on a weeknight in Deer Park. When those are done in love, they are not competing with God. They are what loving Him looks like with your hands.

Check Where The Worry Goes

Your anxiety tells you what you think is holding the world together. Bring it to the Father who already knows what you need. If something keeps you awake more than God comforts you, name it honestly. We explore how good things become rivals in idolatry.

Protect Rest Without Guilt

Rest is not the reward for finishing everything. It is a gift built into the way God made you. Our study on how to rest in the Lord goes further.

Give From A Settled Heart

Money is one of the places a center shows. Give regularly and cheerfully, as you have decided in your heart, not because someone told you it buys a blessing.

You will not do all of this well. Spiritual growth happens slowly, by grace, and never in a straight line. When something else creeps into the middle, you do not start over. You turn back.

Where This Lands

Jesus Is What The Center Looks Like

If you want to know what a life with God at the center looks like, you do not need a chart. You need to watch Jesus.

He prayed early and often, and He also went to weddings and dinners. He withdrew from the crowds, and He also stopped for a bleeding woman and a blind beggar. He spent Himself for His Father's purposes, and from the cross He made sure His mother would be cared for. There was never a moment where loving God and loving people pulled Him in opposite directions, because for Him they were one love.

That is the invitation. Not a ladder to climb, but a center to come home to. The Kingdom is already here, the Father already knows what you need, and you get to live from that today with the people in front of you.

The Whole Thing In One Line

Putting God first means making Him the center your whole life turns around rather than the top rung of a ranking, it begins with listening, it always includes loving your neighbor and your family, and it frees you from the fear of not having enough instead of promising you more.

Questions People Ask

Questions About Putting God First

What does putting God first mean in the Bible?

It means making God, as Jesus reveals Him, the center your whole life is arranged around. Deuteronomy 6 asks Israel to love the Lord with all their heart, soul and strength, which covers the whole person rather than one slot in the week. Jesus quoted that command and immediately joined it to loving your neighbor as yourself. So putting God first is not a ranking where God beats your family for your time. It is a center that shapes how you love everyone and everything else.

Is it God, family, church, then work?

That ranking is common, and it has a real strength because it keeps work from becoming your god. But the Bible never gives that list. Exodus 20 forbids rival gods, not good things arranged in order. Scripture says caring for your household is part of faith, and Jesus rebuked people who used religious devotion as an excuse to neglect their parents. A healthier picture is God at the center with family, church, work and rest all arranged around Him.

Does putting God first mean going to church more?

Not necessarily. Gathering with other believers matters, and the New Testament assumes it. But more church activity is not the same as a life centered on God. Jesus often withdrew from busy ministry to pray, and He said the Sabbath was made for people. If church commitments are costing you your health, your marriage or time with your kids, stepping back may be the more faithful choice. Putting God first is about what sits in the middle, not how full your calendar is.

If I put God first, will He bless me financially?

Matthew 6:33 promises that the Father knows you need food, drink and clothing, and that He will care for you. It does not promise wealth as a reward for devotion, and teaching that turns the verse upside down. Jesus told people to stop chasing things and trust the Father. Using His words as a method for getting more things puts money back at the center. God does provide, often through a generous community, but putting Him first frees you from fear rather than guaranteeing a raise.

How do I start putting God first each day?

Start with listening, since the Shema begins with the word hear. Take a few quiet minutes with Scripture and honest prayer before the day gets loud. Then treat ordinary things, like work, meals and caring for family, as places where you love God with your hands. Notice where your worry goes, because that shows what you trust. Protect rest without guilt. When something else creeps into the center, do not start over. Simply turn back, because grace does the growing.
