What Does The Bible Say About Pornography?

No single verse names it, but Scripture addresses the matter directly, and it puts the responsibility somewhere the church often has not.

The Short Answer

The Direct Answer

Straight Answer

Ask what does the Bible say about pornography and the honest answer is that no single verse names it, because the thing in its modern form did not exist. What Scripture addresses is the underlying matter, and it addresses it clearly.

Jesus puts the weight on the gaze rather than on the person being looked at. Paul treats sexual expression as covenant-shaped rather than private. And the New Testament word porneia sits underneath our word pornography. So no, it is not neutral, and no, shame is not the cure.

This page takes both errors seriously, because the church has produced a great deal of damage with each of them.

The Text

What Jesus Actually Said

“But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Matthew 5:28
The verb matters

The Greek is a purposeful looking, a regard with intent. It is not a description of noticing that somebody is attractive, and reading it that way turns ordinary human perception into sin.

Who is responsible

Eric Barreto notes that “an objectifying gaze is an obstacle to authentic community”, and the burden Jesus assigns sits entirely on the one looking.

The hyperbole

Cut off the hand, tear out the eye. Nobody in church history has read this literally. It is deliberately extreme language marking how seriously the matter is being taken.

The setting

This sits in the Sermon on the Mount between murder and divorce, in a run of sayings where Jesus moves every command from external compliance to the interior.

Takeaway

Jesus does not say the problem is that women exist or that you have eyes. He says the problem is a way of regarding a person that reduces them to a use.

The Reasoning

Why It Is Not A Private Matter

The most common defence is that nobody is harmed. That claim does not survive contact with either the text or the industry.

There is a person

Every image is somebody. The industry sits alongside documented coercion and trafficking, and consent given under financial pressure is a thin thing to build an argument on.

1 Corinthians 6:18

Paul says sexual sin is committed against your own body, which is an unusual claim. He is arguing that this one lands inward in a way others do not.

It trains a way of seeing

Habits form appetites. What you rehearse in private becomes the default lens in public, and the people nearest you are the ones who meet that lens.

James 1:14 and 15

Desire conceives, gives birth to sin, and sin fully grown gives birth to death. James describes a process, which is more useful than a verdict.

On porneia: the New Testament word behind our English sexual immorality is the same root that gives us pornography. It is a broad term covering sex outside covenant, and the early church used it freely in a culture where sexual availability was ordinary and nobody thought it needed defending.

Saying It Plainly

The Church Made This Worse

We are going to be honest about our own side of this, because the teaching most people received has failed on its own terms.

What Purity Culture Taught

That a man's looking is a woman's responsibility to prevent. Dress codes, modesty rules, girls told they were a stumbling block, and the gaze itself never addressed.

What Jesus Taught

He addresses the man. Every clause of Matthew 5:28 puts the responsibility on the one looking, and there is no instruction to the woman anywhere in the passage.

Where We Stand, Plainly

Shame does not work. It has been the church's main tool on this subject for decades and it produces one reliable outcome, which is secrecy, and secrecy is the exact condition the habit needs to survive. A person who believes they are disgusting will not tell anybody, and a person who tells nobody does not get free.

There is also a piece of teaching that needs to be named and dropped. Telling a young person they are now damaged goods, or that they have given away something they cannot get back, is not in the Bible. It is a metaphor somebody invented, and it contradicts the actual doctrine, which is that forgiveness restores rather than discounts.

And on the other side, minimising is not compassion. Saying it is normal and everybody does it leaves somebody trapped and calls it acceptance. Both the shaming version and the shrugging version have the same effect: the person stays stuck and stops talking about it.

What actually works is what James 5:16 says: confess to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed. To one another, meaning a real human being, out loud. Every person we have watched get free did that first, and almost nobody wants to.

In Matthew 5:28, where does Jesus place the responsibility?

On the person being looked at, to avoid causing it
Entirely on the one doing the looking
On the community, to enforce dress standards

Every clause addresses the one who looks. There is no instruction given to the woman anywhere in the passage, and the hyperbole about the hand and the eye is aimed at the same person.

Practical

What Actually Helps

Tell one person

Not a public confession and not a crowd. One trustworthy person who will ask you about it again next week without flinching. This is the step that changes the odds.

Change the conditions

Most of it is situational. Late, alone, tired, bored, on a device with no friction. Romans 13:14 says make no provision for the flesh, which is practical advice about access.

Ask what it is doing

It is usually regulating something else, most often loneliness, stress or numbness. A habit that is solving a problem will not leave until the problem is addressed.

Expect a slope

Progress is fewer and further apart before it is never, and treating a relapse as proof that nothing changed is the thing that ends most attempts.

If You Are Reading This At Two In The Morning

You are not beyond help and you are not the only one in your church dealing with it. Whatever you were told about being ruined is not what God says about you, and the fastest route out starts with saying it to one safe person rather than promising God again in private. If you need somewhere to start, you can send it here.

Where This Lands

What The Goal Actually Is

The aim is not a clean record. It is a restored way of seeing people, and those are not the same target.

A man can go a year without looking at anything and still regard every woman he meets as a category rather than a person. That is not the freedom Jesus is describing. What He is after in Matthew 5 is the interior, and the interior is where the actual work happens.

Which is also why the fix is never willpower alone. Paul does not tell the Romans to try harder. He tells them to be transformed by the renewing of their mind, and renewal is something done to you over time rather than something you achieve in a night.

So if you have been in this a long time and you are tired: the tiredness is not evidence against you. It is evidence you never stopped caring, and that is the part God has to work with.

For related ground, see what lust is, sexual immorality, fornication, forgiveness, grace, repentance and the mind of Christ.

The Whole Thing In One Line

Scripture puts the responsibility on the gaze rather than on the person being looked at, porneia is the root behind the English word, the images are real people, and shame has failed at this for decades while confession to one safe person has not.

If You Want To Talk To Somebody

No forms to fill in and no need to be a member. Send it in and somebody at Sound of Heaven will get back to you privately.

Questions People Ask

Questions People Actually Ask

What does the bible say about pornography directly?

No verse names it, because the medium did not exist in that form. Scripture addresses the matter underneath it. Matthew 5:28 puts the weight on a purposeful, objectifying look. 1 Corinthians 6:18 treats sexual sin as landing inward on the person who commits it. The New Testament word porneia, which sits under our English word pornography, covers sexual expression outside covenant.

Does Matthew 5:28 mean noticing someone attractive is sin?

No. The Greek describes a purposeful regarding with intent, not the involuntary recognition that a person is attractive. Reading it the other way turns ordinary human perception into guilt and leaves people confessing things that are not sins. The hyperbole about the hand and the eye marks how seriously the matter is taken, and nobody in church history has read it literally.

Whose responsibility does Jesus make it?

Entirely the one who looks. Every clause of Matthew 5:28 addresses that person, and there is no instruction given to the woman anywhere in the passage. That is the opposite of how purity culture taught it, with dress codes and modesty rules placing the burden on the person being looked at while the gaze itself went unaddressed.

Is pornography a private matter that hurts nobody?

Every image is a person, and the industry sits alongside documented coercion and trafficking, so consent given under financial pressure is thin ground for that argument. Beyond that, habits form appetites. What is rehearsed in private becomes the default way of seeing people in public, and the people nearest you are the ones who meet that lens.

How do people actually get free from it?

James 5:16 says confess to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed. One trustworthy person, out loud, who will ask again next week. Then change the situational conditions, since most of it is late, alone, tired and frictionless. Then ask what the habit is regulating, usually loneliness or stress, because a habit solving a problem will not leave until the problem is addressed.
