The Ark of the Covenant: What It Was and Where It Went

A gold covered chest Israel treated as the footstool of God's throne. What it held, what happened to it, and why its story ends with a torn curtain instead of a discovery.

The Short Answer

A Box That Was Really A Throne

Straight Answer

The ark of the covenant was a wooden chest overlaid with gold, built at Sinai to hold the tablets of the covenant and kept in the innermost room of the tabernacle and later of Solomon's temple. Israel understood it as the place where God met His people, the footstool of an invisible throne.

It drops out of the record around the Babylonian conquest, and Jeremiah said nobody would miss it. In Jesus, the presence it marked stopped living in a room and came to live among people.

Almost every popular idea about the ark, from Hollywood to the prophecy charts, gets something important wrong. So let's walk through it.

Exodus 25

How It Was Made And What Went Inside

The instructions come in Exodus 25:10 to 22. A chest of acacia wood two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide and a cubit and a half high, covered with pure gold inside and out. With a cubit of roughly eighteen inches, itself an estimate, that is about 45 by 27 by 27 inches.

Gold rings held two poles that were never to be removed (Exodus 25:15). It was built to travel, and carried without being touched.

The Tablets

Exodus 25:16. The testimony, the two stone tablets of the covenant. That is why it is called the ark of the covenant or the ark of the testimony.

The Manna

Exodus 16:33 to 34. A jar of manna was set before the testimony, a memory of forty years of bread nobody planted.

Aaron's Staff

Numbers 17:10. The staff that budded was put back before the testimony as a sign, after a revolt over who had the right to serve as priest.

The Lid

Exodus 25:17 to 21. A solid gold cover with two cherubim hammered from the same piece, wings spread over it, faces turned toward the lid.

Hebrews 9:4 lists the jar, the staff and the tablets inside the ark. But the day Solomon brought it into the temple, Kings says this:

“There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone that Moses put there at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the people of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.”

1 Kings 8:9

Exodus and Numbers put the jar and staff before the testimony, possibly beside the ark rather than in it, and Kings describes one day centuries later. The Bible lets both statements stand without anxiety, and so can we.

The Lid

The Mercy Seat Was The Point

What mattered most about the ark was not the gold or the contents. It was the empty space above the lid.

“There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel.”

Exodus 25:22

Israel's neighbors put statues in their temples. Israel put an empty space between two cherubim. Scripture calls God the one enthroned on the cherubim (1 Samuel 4:4), and David called the ark the footstool of our God (1 Chronicles 28:2). The throne was invisible. The ark was where His feet rested.

Hebrew and GreekThe Mercy Seatkapporet · hilastērion27 OT Uses
Kapporet

The Hebrew name for the lid, from kaphar, to cover or to make atonement. The lid was the place of covering.

Once a year

Leviticus 16. On the Day of Atonement the high priest went behind the veil and sprinkled blood on the front of the mercy seat and in front of it.

Hilastērion

The Greek word the Septuagint uses for the kapporet. The New Testament uses it twice: Hebrews 9:5 for the mercy seat itself, and Romans 3:25.

Romans 3:25

Paul says God put Jesus forward as a hilastērion by His blood. Many translations say propitiation. Paul is reaching for the lid of the ark.

When Paul picks that word he is not describing an angry God being paid off. He is pointing at the meeting place. Jesus is where God and people meet. We go further into the lid in our study of the mercy seat and the yearly ritual in the Day of Atonement.

One piece of sermon folklore needs correcting. The rope tied to the high priest's ankle, so he could be dragged out if he died, is not in Leviticus 16 or anywhere in Scripture. It comes from much later Jewish legend. This ties into what Ebenezer means, which is worth reading next.

From Sinai To Jerusalem

The Ark's Journey Through Israel's Story

Exodus 40 · Numbers 10
Into The Tent, Then Out In Front

The ark goes behind the veil and the glory cloud fills the tent. On the road it goes ahead to find Israel a resting place.

Joshua 3
Priests Step Into A Flooded River

At flood stage, the water stops when the priests' feet touch it, and the ark stands in the riverbed until the nation has crossed.

Joshua 6
Seven Days Around Jericho

Carried around the city for seven days. See how the walls of Jericho fell.

1 Samuel 4
Carried Like A Lucky Charm

The elders bring the ark from Shiloh to save them in battle. Israel loses anyway and the Philistines capture it.

1 Samuel 5 to 7
Dagon On His Face

Dagon's statue falls before it and plague follows it until the Philistines send it home on a cart. It then sits at Kiriath-jearim for twenty years.

2 Samuel 6
David Dances It Home

After Uzzah dies, it blesses Obed-edom's house for three months. Then David brings it into Jerusalem, dancing before the Lord with all his might.

1 Kings 8
The Cloud Fills The House

The glory cloud fills the temple so the priests cannot stand to minister, what later tradition called the Shekinah glory.

The Movie Version

A power source. Carry it into battle and you win. Open it and faces melt.

The Bible's Version

1 Samuel 4 is the Bible's own rebuttal. Israel tried to use the ark as a weapon and lost it the same day. It marked God's presence, and presence cannot be operated.

Beth-shemesh And Uzzah

The Two Stories That Trouble People

Two stories describe people dying near the ark, and plenty of readers quietly close the Bible here. We are not going to skip them.

At Beth-shemesh, 1 Samuel 6:19 says men were struck because they looked upon the ark. The number is a known textual problem: most Hebrew manuscripts read seventy men, fifty thousand men, and most modern translations print seventy.

“And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God.”

2 Samuel 6:7

The law said Levites carried the ark on poles without touching the holy things (Numbers 4:15). David used a new cart, like the Philistines. The chronicler admits it: “because we did not seek him according to the rule” (1 Chronicles 15:13). And notice David's own reaction. He was angry, then afraid (2 Samuel 6:8 to 9).

Read What It Says

The text says God struck him. We do not rewrite that into a coincidence. The writers told it the way Israel understood it.

Read Where It Sits

Old covenant writers describing holiness as a presence nobody could approach safely. They saw truly, that God is not a possession, and partially. God revealed Himself progressively, and fully in Jesus.

Read It Through Jesus

In the gospels the direction reverses. When the woman in Mark 5 reaches out and touches Jesus, her uncleanness does not flow into Him. His wholeness flows out to her. She is healed, not struck.

Takeaway

Uzzah shows how Israel experienced holiness before Jesus. The woman at His hem shows what holiness actually is: it heals the hand that reaches for it.

If These Stories Scared You

Some people were taught these passages as proof that God is waiting for them to slip. Look at how Jesus treated the people who reached for Him. That is the Father's face.

The Disappearance

So Where Did The Ark Go?

The last time the historical books mention it is 2 Chronicles 35:3, when Josiah tells the Levites to put the holy ark in the house Solomon built. Then Babylon burns the temple in 586 BC. The plunder lists in 2 Kings 25 and Jeremiah 52 name pillars, stands, pots and shovels. No ark.

The second temple's Most Holy Place stood empty. Josephus, describing Herod's version, says there was nothing at all in it (Jewish War 5.5.5).

Lost To Babylon

The simplest answer: taken or destroyed in 586 BC. The silent plunder lists are an argument from silence, and that cuts both ways.

Hidden By Jeremiah · Later Tradition

2 Maccabees 2, written centuries later, cites an older record that Jeremiah “found a chamber in a cave in which he put the tent, the ark, and the altar of incense; then he sealed the entrance”. It is tradition, not eyewitness history.

Aksum, Ethiopia · Tradition

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church holds that the ark rests in Aksum, brought by Menelik, son of Solomon, as the Kebra Nagast tells it. Only one guardian monk may see it, and no outsider has verified it.

Ron Wyatt · Unsupported

Wyatt claimed he found the ark beneath the crucifixion site, with Jesus' blood on the mercy seat. He never produced evidence anyone could check.

“And when you have multiplied and been fruitful in the land, in those days, declares the Lord, they shall no more say, ‘The ark of the covenant of the Lord.’ It shall not come to mind or be remembered or missed; it shall not be made again.”

Jeremiah 3:16

Jeremiah, a priest's son, said the most sacred object in Israel would not be missed. That is astonishing.

What stood in the Most Holy Place of the temple Jesus knew?

The original ark, returned after the exile
A gold replica built by Herod
Nothing at all

Josephus says the innermost room of Herod's temple had nothing at all in it. The ark was never recovered after Babylon, which is exactly what Jeremiah 3:16 said would not be missed.

Where It Points

From A Box To A Person

John 1:14 says the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The verb is skēnoō, to pitch a tent. The tabernacle language is deliberate. The presence that rested above a lid in a curtained room now eats with fishermen in Galilee.

At the moment Jesus died, Matthew 27:51 says the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. That curtain hid the Most Holy Place. Top to bottom means it was opened from God's side.

“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh.”

Hebrews 10:19 to 20
Where We Stand, Plainly

We are not waiting for the ark to be found. Jeremiah said it would not be missed or made again, and we take him at his word. The meeting place moved into a Person, and by His Spirit into His people. That is why Paul can say we are the temple of God.

Many prophecy teachers say the ark has to be recovered for a rebuilt temple before the end. We believe that is wrong. It asks God to go back to a room behind a curtain after He tore the curtain Himself. The covenant transition was completed when the temple fell in AD 70, inside the generation Jesus named. See when is Jesus coming back.

Revelation 11:19 does show the ark in God's temple in heaven. That is apocalyptic imagery written to seven real first century churches, telling them the covenant presence was secure while the earthly temple fell. It is not a clue for treasure hunters.

And the ark is not an embarrassment to explain away either. It shows God choosing to live among a wandering people, in a tent. That same instinct sent Jesus.

Where This Lands

You Do Not Need To Find It

People have spent fortunes looking for the ark. Maybe nobody has found it because God finished what it was for.

The ark said God would meet His people at one spot, once a year, through one man, behind a curtain. Jesus says come to Me. The mercy seat is no longer a gold lid in a dark room. It is a Person who knows your name.

The Whole Thing In One Line

The ark of the covenant was the footstool of God's invisible throne, it vanished around 586 BC unmissed just as Jeremiah said, and in Jesus the meeting place became a Person with the curtain torn open from God's side.

Questions People Ask

Questions About The Ark Of The Covenant

What is the ark of the covenant in the Bible?

The ark of the covenant was a gold covered chest of acacia wood, built at Sinai following Exodus 25. It held the stone tablets of the covenant and sat in the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle and later Solomon's temple. Its lid, the mercy seat, carried two cherubim, and Israel understood the space above it as the place where God met His people.

What was inside the ark of the covenant?

The two stone tablets of the covenant. Hebrews 9:4 also lists a golden jar of manna and Aaron's staff that budded, though Exodus 16 and Numbers 17 place those before the testimony, possibly beside the ark. By the day Solomon brought it into the temple, 1 Kings 8:9 says there was nothing in it except the two tablets of stone.

Why did God strike Uzzah for touching the ark?

2 Samuel 6 says Uzzah steadied the ark when the oxen stumbled and God struck him down. The law said Levites carried it on poles without touching it, but David used a cart, and 1 Chronicles 15:13 admits they did not seek God according to the rule. The writers told it as Israel experienced holiness before Jesus. In the gospels, people who touch Jesus are healed.

Where is the ark of the covenant today?

Nobody knows. It disappears around the Babylonian destruction of the temple in 586 BC, and the second temple's Most Holy Place stood empty. 2 Maccabees 2 preserves a later tradition that Jeremiah hid it in a cave. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church holds that it rests in Aksum, but no outsider has verified it. Ron Wyatt's claim to have found it beneath Calvary has no supporting evidence.

Does the ark need to be found for a rebuilt temple?

No. Jeremiah 3:16 says the ark would not be remembered, missed or made again. When Jesus died the temple curtain was torn from top to bottom, and the temple fell in AD 70, completing the covenant transition within the generation Jesus named. At Sound of Heaven we are not waiting for a box to be recovered. God's presence lives in Jesus and, by the Spirit, in His people.
