In The World But Not Of The World: What Jesus Actually Prayed

The phrase is not in the Bible, but the idea is, and it points the opposite way from how it usually gets used. Jesus did not pray for His people to be pulled out. He prayed for them to be sent in.

The Short Answer

A Paraphrase Of A Prayer

Straight Answer

In the world but not of the world is not a Bible verse. It summarizes John 17:14 to 18, where Jesus prays that His followers would stay in the world, be protected from the evil one, and be sent into it the same way He was sent.

Not of the world means your identity, loyalty and way of thinking come from the Kingdom of God rather than from the system around you. In the world means you stay put, love your neighbors and do good right where you live.

That second half is the one Christians forget. The saying gets used to justify pulling back, when the prayer behind it is about going in.

The Source

What Jesus Prayed In John 17

The night before the cross, after the meal and the long teaching in the upper room, Jesus prays out loud while His disciples listen. Part of it is for the people standing in the room.

“I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.”

John 17:14 to 18
Verse 14
They Have The Word

The disciples are different because they received what Jesus said. The hostility they meet is a reaction to that, and Jesus says it is the same reaction He got.

Verse 15
Not Taken Out

He names the escape option and refuses it. What He asks for instead is protection from the evil one, the accuser and every lie that would pull them away from the truth, while they stay exactly where they are.

Verse 16
Not Of It

Their life has the same source as His. Not of the world describes where they come from. It is not a map of where they are allowed to go.

Verse 17
Set Apart By Truth

To sanctify is to set apart for God. The tool Jesus names is truth. He does not say sanctify them by distance.

Verse 18
Sent In

The prayer ends in a mission. The Father sent the Son into the world, and the Son sends His people into the same world, on the same terms.

So the popular saying is a fair paraphrase of verses 14 and 16. It just tends to leave off verses 15 and 18, and those are the verses that tell you what to do with it.

The Greek Word

Two Meanings Of World

A lot of the confusion comes from one English word carrying several ideas. The New Testament word behind world is kosmos, and John uses it in more than one sense, sometimes a few verses apart.

GreekKosmosκοσμοςOne Word, Several Jobs
Root sense

Order or arrangement. 1 Peter 3:3 uses it for outward adornment, which is where English gets cosmetic.

The made world

John 1:10. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

The people God loves

John 3:16. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son. Here the world is humanity, all of it.

The system against Him

1 John 2:15. Do not love the world or anything in the world. Here the world is an arrangement of desire, pride and status that runs without God.

Put John 3:16 beside 1 John 2:15 and it looks like a contradiction. God loves the world. Do not love the world. Same author, same word. The word is simply doing two different jobs.

The World We Are Not Of

The pattern. What John sums up as the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. A way of being human that organizes everything around self, fear and status.

The World We Are Sent Into

The people. Coworkers, neighbors, the family down the street, the whole created order God called good. God loved this world enough to give His Son for it.

Not of the world never means not for the world. Hear the warning in 1 John and forget the love in John 3:16, and you end up suspicious of everyone outside the church, a posture Jesus never took.

John also told his readers that the world and its desires pass away, and a few lines later that it was the last hour. He meant their hour. They lived at the end of the age, as the old covenant order centered on the temple came apart in their generation. That age passed. The Kingdom Jesus brought remains, and it is here now.

Takeaway

Love the world God loves. Refuse the pattern that runs it without Him. Mixing those two up is where most of the damage starts.

Manage My Giving

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."2 Corinthians 9:7

Two Ways To Miss It

Withdrawal And War Both Get It Wrong

Once people grasp the not of the world half, they tend to fall into a ditch. Each one feels faithful. None of them is the prayer.

The bunker

Pull back. Christian friends only, as little contact with outsiders as possible. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 5:10 that avoiding the immoral people of this world would mean you would have to leave this world, and he never asked anyone to.

The battlefield

Treat the surrounding culture as the enemy and every disagreement as a fight to win. People become opponents, and the world Jesus died for becomes the world we are at war with.

The blend

The ditch on the other side. Stay in the world and quietly become of it. Same anxieties, same outrage, same scramble for status, with a verse attached.

The sent life

Present and different at once. Fully involved in ordinary life, with a renewed mind and a loyalty that belongs to Jesus.

The case for withdrawal deserves a fair hearing. The pressure to conform is real, habits shape us more than we admit, and some environments really are harmful for a person in a fragile season. Wisdom sometimes says step away from a particular place or relationship. That is a decision about one thing, though, not a way of life.

Where We Stand, Plainly

Sound of Heaven believes not of the world is about source and allegiance, not distance. We are not of the world because our life comes from Jesus and our loyalty belongs to His Kingdom, which is present and active now. We are in the world because He put us here on purpose.

We think the bunker approach is wrong, and we think the culture war approach is wrong too. Treating people as enemies contradicts the prayer the phrase comes from. Our fight is truth against deception, carried out with love and prayer, and a neighbor is never the enemy.

That is also why Sound of Heaven does not endorse candidates or parties. We encourage believers who can vote to do it prayerfully, and we refuse to let any political identity become the thing that defines us, because that is exactly what being of the world looks like. We wrote more on this in what the Bible says about electing leaders.

And the blend is wrong as well. Being present never means being absorbed.

How It Happens

Renewed, Not Removed

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Romans 12:2

Paul's answer to the pattern of this world is not a change of address. It is a change of mind. The pattern gets into us through repetition, through what we watch and scroll, through fear and comparison. The Holy Spirit works it out of us through steady exposure to truth, until we think the way Jesus thinks. We wrote about that in the mind of Christ.

This is why not of the world is inside work before it is outside work. A person can live in a church bubble and still be completely of the world: anxious, envious, hungry for approval. Another person can work in the busiest office park in Melville and be free of all of it.

Notice The Pattern

Outrage, fear of missing out, the need to be seen. Those are the currents Paul means, and naming them is where freedom starts.

Feed On Truth

Scripture, prayer, worship, time with other believers. These are not boxes to tick. They are how the Spirit renews a mind over time.

Test And Approve

Romans 12:2 goes on to say that a renewed mind can discern God's will. The goal is mature judgment, not a longer rulebook.

Much of the in the world question lives in gray areas, and in Romans 14 Paul says each believer should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whether your family watches a certain show or hands out candy at the door is often a matter of conscience between you and the Lord. We took that approach in should Christians celebrate Halloween, and it reaches far beyond October.

In John 17:15, what does Jesus ask the Father not to do?

Let the world hate His disciples
Take His disciples out of the world
Give His disciples a new name

My prayer is not that you take them out of the world. Jesus rules out escape as the plan, asks for protection instead, and three verses later sends them in.

The Mission

Sent The Way Jesus Was Sent

“Again Jesus said, ‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.’”

John 20:21

Look at how Jesus was sent. He became flesh, grew up in a small town, ate with tax collectors and got criticized for the company He kept. He was completely in the world and never once of it. That is the template.

He gave two ordinary images for it in Matthew 5. You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world. Salt only works in contact with food. Light only matters where it is dark. Neither image makes any sense for a people who keep their distance. We go further with both in salt and light and Jesus is the light of the world.

The earliest Christians understood this. An anonymous letter probably from the second century, the Epistle to Diognetus, describes believers who follow local customs in food and clothing while living in a way that stands out. In the Roberts and Donaldson translation it says, “They dwell in their own countries, but simply as sojourners.” A few lines later: “They pass their days on earth, but they are citizens of heaven.”

Citizens of heaven there does not describe people waiting to leave. It describes people whose allegiance belongs somewhere else while they stay fully present. Paul told the Philippians, a church in a proud Roman colony, that their citizenship was in heaven. He calls it being ambassadors for Christ: living in one place on behalf of another.

In practice it looks ordinary. Honest work, showing up for neighbors, forgiving the relative, praying for people you disagree with. None of it is dramatic, and all of it is different.

Takeaway

The measure of not of the world is not how far you stand from people. It is how much of Jesus they find when you stand close.

Where This Lands

Home Is Where He Sent You

Everything in John 17 comes back to Jesus. The disciples' identity and their mission are both copied from His.

So the question is not how to keep your distance from the world. It is how to be like Jesus in it. He did not fear it, did not fight it and did not blend into it. He loved it, told it the truth and gave Himself for it.

You do not have to wait for some later day to live like that. The Kingdom is here, and you carry it into your street, your job, your group chat and your family dinner table this week.

The Whole Thing In One Line

In the world but not of the world means your life comes from Jesus, your loyalty belongs to His Kingdom, and your address is right where He sent you, among people God loves.

Questions People Ask

Questions About Being In The World

What does in the world but not of the world mean?

It means Christians live fully in ordinary life while their identity, loyalty and way of thinking come from Jesus and His Kingdom. The phrase paraphrases John 17:14 to 18, where Jesus says His followers are not of the world, just as He is not, and then refuses to ask that they be taken out of it. Instead He sends them into the world the same way the Father sent Him. It is about source, not distance.

Is in the world but not of the world in the Bible?

Not as an exact phrase. The idea comes from John 17, especially verses 14 through 18, where Jesus prays about His disciples being not of the world while remaining in it and being sent into it. Romans 12:2 and 1 John 2:15 to 17 add to it by warning against conforming to the pattern of this world. So the saying is a fair summary of Scripture, as long as you keep the sending part.

What does the Bible mean by the world?

The Greek word is kosmos, and it has more than one meaning. Sometimes it is the created world or humanity, as in John 3:16, where God so loved the world that He gave His Son. Other times it is the system of pride, greed and status that runs without God, as in 1 John 2:15, which says do not love the world. Christians love the first and refuse the second.

Should Christians separate themselves from the world?

Not in the sense of withdrawing from people. In 1 Corinthians 5:10 Paul says that avoiding all the immoral people of this world would mean leaving the world entirely, and he never asks for that. Jesus prayed that His followers would not be taken out of the world. Wisdom can mean stepping away from a particular harmful place or relationship. But the Christian life as a whole is lived among people, as salt and light.

How do you live in the world but not of it?

Start on the inside. Romans 12:2 says not to conform to the pattern of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so feed your mind on Scripture, prayer and time with other believers. Then stay present. Do honest work, love your neighbors, forgive, give generously and refuse to treat people as enemies. Your first allegiance, political ones included, belongs to Jesus. The goal is to look like Him in ordinary places.
