The Purpose Of Marriage: What God Had In Mind

Companionship, covenant faithfulness and a living picture of Christ's self-giving love, with children as a blessing and never the whole point.

The Short Answer

Two People, One Covenant, One Picture

Straight Answer

The purpose of marriage in Scripture starts with a sentence God speaks over a lonely man: it is not good to be alone. Marriage exists for companionship between equals, for faithful covenant love that God Himself witnesses, and to show the world what Christ's self-giving love looks like.

Children are a real blessing inside that covenant. They are not the only purpose, a marriage without them is not a lesser marriage, and a single life is not a lesser life.

That last line matters. A lot of marriage teaching lifts marriage up by pushing everyone else down, and Jesus does not.

The Big Picture

Five Purposes Woven Into One Covenant

Companionship · Genesis 2:18

The first thing in creation God calls not good is a person alone. Marriage answers that with a partner who stands face to face, not a servant who stands behind.

Covenant · Malachi 2:14

The prophet calls a wife the partner of a marriage covenant and says the Lord is the witness. Marriage is a promise made in front of God, not a contract that lasts while it pays.

One flesh · Mark 10:8

Two lives become one shared life. Jesus reaches past the divorce debates of His day and goes back to the beginning to say it.

A picture · Ephesians 5:32

Paul says the one flesh union points to Christ and the church. A good marriage preaches without words, and what it preaches is self-giving love.

Blessing · Psalm 127:3

Children are called a heritage from the Lord. A gift given inside the covenant, never the price of admission to it.

Mission · Genesis 1:28

The first couple are handed a world to tend together. Marriage faces outward. Two people who love each other well become a blessing to the people around them.

Notice what is missing from that list. Nothing in Scripture says the point of marriage is to make you happy. Happiness often comes with it, but it is not the foundation. And every purpose on the list belongs to both people.

The Beginning

Not Good To Be Alone

Genesis 1 keeps saying it is good. Then Genesis 2 breaks the rhythm.

“It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

Genesis 2:18

To modern ears helper sounds like an assistant, somebody junior who hands you the tools. That is not what the Hebrew says.

HebrewEzer Kenegdoעֵזֶר כְּנֶגְּדוֹGenesis 2:18, 20
Ezer

Help or helper. Of its roughly twenty uses in the Hebrew Bible, most describe God. “My help comes from the Lord” in Psalm 121:2 uses this word. So does Psalm 33:20, where God is our help and our shield.

Kenegdo

Corresponding to him, opposite him, in front of him. A partner who faces you as an equal, not one who walks behind you.

Together

A help who is your match. Strength that comes alongside, from someone who shares your nature and can stand up to you.

Rabbi Tamara Cohn Eskenazi puts the point well in a study of this verse for TheTorah.com. The partner God envisions is “someone who can adequately interact with us, take a stand, and not merely echo our views.”

That is the first purpose of marriage: being truly known by someone who is truly other. The man's response in Genesis 2:23, bone of my bones, is recognition, not ownership, and verse 25 closes with two people unashamed, nothing hidden.

The Common Misreading

The woman was made to assist the man. Helper means subordinate, so the order of creation sets up a chain of command.

What The Text Says

Ezer is the word Scripture uses for God coming to our rescue. Kenegdo means a match who faces you. The ranking comes after the fall, in Genesis 3:16, as a consequence, not a design.

The Promise

A Covenant God Witnesses

By Malachi's day, men in Judah were walking away from their wives and still showing up at the altar expecting God to receive their offerings. Malachi tells them why.

“It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.”

Malachi 2:14

Three words carry the weight. Witness, partner, covenant. God is not a guest at the wedding. He is the witness who remembers what was said. If you want the bigger background, we walk through it in what a covenant is.

When the Pharisees try to trap Jesus with a divorce question in Mark 10, He refuses their argument and goes back behind Moses to creation.

“‘The two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Mark 10:8 to 9

In a world where a husband could end a marriage far more easily than a wife could, those words protected women. We cover what unfaithfulness actually is in what adultery is in the Bible, and Solomon shows what happens when marriage becomes a tool of power in why Solomon had so many wives.

Takeaway

Faithfulness is not a side feature of marriage. It is what a covenant is: two people choosing each other before God, when feelings rise and when they fade.

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."2 Corinthians 9:7

The Pattern

Ephesians 5 Starts With Verse 21

Ephesians 5 is the most quoted marriage passage in the church and one of the most misused. Most people start at verse 22. Paul does not.

“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

Ephesians 5:21

In the Greek, verse 22 does not even have its own verb. It borrows submit from verse 21. So the instruction to wives is a branch of a command given to every believer. Mutual submission is the trunk.

Move One · Verse 21

Everyone yields to everyone else. A startling sentence in a Roman home, where the husband held near total power.

Move Two · Verses 22 to 24

Wives are addressed as full moral agents who choose how they live. Paul speaks to them directly, as people who make their own choices before God, not as property to be managed.

Move Three · Verses 25 to 30

Husbands get the longest section, and the hardest standard: love your wife as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her. The model is a cross, not a throne.

Move Four · Verses 31 to 32

Paul quotes Genesis 2:24 and then says he is really talking about Christ and the church. The marriage is the picture; Jesus is the substance.

Where We Stand, Plainly

At Sound of Heaven we read Ephesians 5 through verse 21 and through the cross. Whatever headship means, Paul defines it by Christ, who washed feet and gave up His life. It is a call to serve first and sacrifice most, never a license to control, demand or dominate.

So we reject the teaching that makes marriage a chain of command with the husband issuing orders and the wife obeying. It is wrong, and it gets used on women who are told their silence is holiness. We also reject the opposite error, the idea that the passage is just an embarrassing leftover we can skip. Paul was doing something radical in his world, and his pattern of mutual, self-giving love is exactly what marriages need now.

And we say this with no hedge at all. Marriage vows never require anyone to stay in abuse. Our longer answer is in biblical reasons for divorce.

The wedding imagery for Christ and His people runs through the prophets into Revelation, and it was fulfilled in the covenant transition of the first century. The church is not waiting at the altar. She is the bride now. So an ordinary marriage, in a kitchen in Deer Park or anywhere else, shows a love that is already fully given.

Where does Paul's instruction on marriage in Ephesians 5 actually begin?

Verse 22, with wives submitting to husbands
Verse 21, with all believers submitting to one another
Verse 25, with husbands loving their wives

Verse 22 has no verb of its own in the Greek and borrows it from verse 21. The whole passage hangs on mutual submission out of reverence for Christ, with Christ's self-giving as the pattern for both.

The Guardrails

Children Are A Blessing, Singleness Is A Gift

For long stretches of church history, marriage was taught as mainly about producing children. An earlier version of this article leaned that way too. We think that was wrong.

Genesis 1:28 does bless the first couple to be fruitful, and Psalm 127:3 calls children a heritage from the Lord. We celebrate every child. But Genesis 2 gives the reason for the first marriage before any child is mentioned, and the reason is companionship. A couple who cannot have children, or who marry later in life, have not missed the purpose of marriage. They are living it.

Then look at who founded the church. Jesus never married. Paul was single when he wrote 1 Corinthians 7, and he wished others could share his freedom. We lay out the evidence in was Paul married.

“I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.”

1 Corinthians 7:7

Paul calls both marriage and singleness a gift. Jesus Himself honored those who stay unmarried for the sake of the kingdom in Matthew 19:12, and Isaiah 56 promised eunuchs, who could never have children, a name better than sons and daughters. We explore that promise in eunuchs in the Bible.

If you are single, you are not waiting for your life to start. The Kingdom is here now, and you are a full participant in it.

In Genesis 2, what reason does God give before creating the woman?

So the man would have children
So someone could help the man with the garden work
It is not good for the man to be alone

Genesis 2:18 names aloneness as the problem. Children are blessed in Genesis 1:28, and they are a gift, but the first reason Scripture gives for marriage is a partner who faces you as an equal.

If your marriage is lonely, cold or full of conflict, you are not a failure and God has not given up on you. Get help early.

If you are afraid in your own home, your safety comes first. God does not ask you to protect a covenant your spouse has already broken with violence, threats or control. Reach out to someone you trust, and if you are in danger, call 911.

If you are divorced, you are not second class in the Kingdom. Jesus treats broken people with tenderness, not suspicion, and so do we.

Where This Lands

Marriage Points Past Itself

Every purpose of marriage points beyond the couple. Companionship shows that we were made for relationship. Covenant faithfulness shows a God who keeps His word. One flesh shows that love really can make two lives one. And the whole thing points to Jesus, who gave Himself completely for His people.

The love marriage points to is not rationed to couples. It is already yours in Christ.

The Whole Thing In One Line

Marriage is a covenant of equals, made before God, for companionship and faithful love that pictures Christ's self-giving, with children as a blessing and singleness honored as a gift.

Questions People Ask

Questions About The Purpose Of Marriage

What is the purpose of marriage according to the Bible?

Scripture gives marriage several purposes that work together. Genesis 2 starts with companionship, because it is not good for a person to be alone. Malachi 2:14 calls marriage a covenant that God Himself witnesses, so faithfulness sits at its center. Ephesians 5 says the union is a picture of Christ's self-giving love for the church. Children are a blessing inside marriage, but they are not its only purpose.

What does helper mean in Genesis 2:18?

The Hebrew phrase is ezer kenegdo. Ezer means help, and most of its uses in the Hebrew Bible describe God, as in Psalm 121:2, where my help comes from the Lord. Kenegdo means corresponding to him or standing opposite him. Together the phrase describes a partner who is a true match, strong and equal, not an assistant or a junior.

Is having children the main purpose of marriage?

No. Children are a real blessing, and Psalm 127:3 calls them a heritage from the Lord. But Genesis 2 gives companionship as the reason for the first marriage before any child is mentioned. A couple who cannot have children, or who marry later in life, are not missing the purpose of marriage. Their marriage is fully a covenant and fully a picture of Christ's love.

What does Ephesians 5 teach about husbands and wives?

Ephesians 5 begins at verse 21 with a command to every believer: submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Verse 22 borrows its verb from that line, so the words to wives grow out of mutual submission. Husbands are told to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her. The pattern for both is Christ's self-giving love, never control, and nothing in the passage requires anyone to stay in abuse.

Is it wrong to stay single as a Christian?

Not at all. Jesus never married, and Paul was single when he wrote 1 Corinthians 7, where he calls both singleness and marriage a gift from God. Jesus honored people who stayed unmarried for the sake of the kingdom in Matthew 19:12. A single believer is not waiting for real life to begin. They are a full participant in the Kingdom of God right now.
