The Role Of The Holy Spirit: What He Does Now

Jesus called Him another Helper and said His arrival would be better than His own staying. Here is what the Spirit actually does in a person, and in a church, right now.

The Short Answer

Jesus, Present And Working

Straight Answer

The role of the Holy Spirit is to make the risen Jesus present and active in His people. He convicts, gives new birth, lives in you, seals you, teaches you, prays for you, grows the character of Jesus in you and gives gifts to the whole church.

He is not a mood, a power supply or a junior partner in the Godhead. He is a Person, fully God, and He is doing all of this today.

Most Christians know far less about the Spirit than about the Father and the Son, and it shows. Scripture has a lot to say here, and it is better news than most of us were taught.

He, Not It

How He Often Gets Described

An energy, a feeling in the room, a force God sends out, the goosebumps during the bridge of a song. Something you get more or less of, like signal strength.

How Scripture Describes Him

Someone who teaches, testifies, speaks, decides, can be grieved and can be lied to. Someone Jesus calls “he” and “him” all through John 14 to 16.

The other view deserves a fair hearing. The word for spirit in Hebrew and Greek also means breath and wind, and the Old Testament often shows the Spirit coming upon people like a power. Some conclude He is God's active force and nothing more.

The New Testament will not let us stop there. The Spirit hands out gifts “as he wills” in 1 Corinthians 12:11. In Acts 5, Peter tells Ananias he lied to the Holy Spirit and in the next breath says he lied to God. And Jesus sends us to baptize in one name, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

So here it is without hedging. One God, three distinct Persons, each fully God. The Spirit is not a third of God or a lesser God. For the wider picture, read the Trinity in the Bible, and for a full portrait of the Spirit Himself, see who the Holy Spirit is. This post stays on what He does.

Takeaway

You cannot have a relationship with a force. You can with a Person, and that changes how you pray, how you listen and how you treat Him.

John 14 To 16

The One Called To Your Side

On the night before the cross, Jesus spent much of His last conversation on the Spirit, and four times He used one Greek word for Him.

GreekParakletosπαράκλητοςFive NT Uses
Built from

Para, beside, and a form of kaleo, to call. One who has been called to stand beside you.

Where it appears

John 14:16, 14:26, 15:26 and 16:7 for the Spirit. Then 1 John 2:1, where Jesus Christ the righteous is our Advocate with the Father.

How it is translated

Helper, Advocate, Counselor, Comforter. Each catches part of it and none catches all of it.

The setting

A courtroom. The one who stands next to the accused, speaks on their behalf and does not walk out when things turn against them.

When Jesus promises “another Helper,” He means the Spirit will be to the disciples what He Himself has been to them. The Spirit is not a lesser replacement. He is Jesus’ own presence, no longer limited to one body in one town.

“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”

John 16:7 ESV

Then comes a courtroom twist in chapter 16. The Advocate who stands beside believers turns and exposes the world. Sharon Ringe at Working Preacher describes Him as the one who becomes “the prosecutor who exposes the errors in the world's versions of sin, righteousness, and judgment”. Satan is the accuser. The Spirit is the Advocate. It matters which voice you listen to.

One small correction, even though it helps our side. Preachers often say the King James word “Comforter” once meant strengthener, not consoler. The root is real: it comes from a Late Latin verb, confortare, meaning “to strengthen much”. But English used comfort for consolation in grief long before 1611. The honest version is better anyway. He consoles and He strengthens, from right beside you.

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."2 Corinthians 9:7

His Work In A Person

What He Does From First Conviction Onward

In real life several of these happen at once, but Scripture gives a clear sequence of what the Spirit does in someone who comes to Jesus.

John 16:8
He Convicts

He exposes the truth about sin, and verse 9 defines the sin as not believing in Jesus. Conviction points you to Him, not merely at your failures.

John 3:5 · Titus 3:5
He Gives New Birth

Nobody reforms their way into the Kingdom. The Spirit regenerates a person from the inside. More in born of water and Spirit.

Romans 8:9 · 1 Corinthians 6:19
He Moves In

Every believer has the Spirit living in them, not only the gifted or the dramatic. Your body is His temple.

Ephesians 1:13 to 14
He Seals You

A seal marked ownership and protected what it closed. Paul calls the Spirit the guarantee of our inheritance. A true believer does not lose that seal.

John 14:26 · 16:13
He Teaches And Guides

He brings the words of Jesus to remembrance and guides into all the truth. No new gospel, just the old one made alive.

Galatians 5:22 to 23
He Grows Fruit

Love, joy, peace and the rest are the character of Jesus forming in you over years. See the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

And through all of it, He prays, for people who do not have the words.

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”

Romans 8:26 ESV

He also testifies with your spirit that you are a child of God, in Romans 8:16. That assurance is not arrogance. And because He is a Person, He can be grieved, which we unpack in grieving the Holy Spirit.

Takeaway

You were never meant to do the Christian life by willpower with Jesus cheering from a distance. The Spirit in you is how Jesus lives His life through you.

His Work In The Body

Gifts, Witness And One Body

The Spirit is personal, but never private. Most of what the New Testament says about Him is written to churches, about what He does among people together.

He gives gifts

1 Corinthians 12:7 says each one is given a manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. Wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues and interpretation. See spiritual gifts for the full lists.

He empowers witness

Acts 1:8. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses.” The power is for pointing to Jesus. More in the power of the Holy Spirit.

He fills and overflows

At Pentecost the promised Spirit was poured out on sons and daughters, young and old. We cover that experience in the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

He makes one body

1 Corinthians 12:13. In one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, Jews or Greeks, slaves or free. Ephesians 4:3 calls it the unity of the Spirit, which we keep rather than create.

When Peter quoted Joel about the last days, he meant his own days, the closing years of the old covenant age that ended with the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70. The Spirit was not a preview of a Kingdom still to come. He was poured out because the Kingdom had come.

Where We Stand, Plainly

At Sound of Heaven we believe every gift of the Spirit is active today. Healing, prophecy, tongues, miracles, words of knowledge, along with teaching, serving, giving and mercy. You can read how we hold it on what we believe.

The strongest case against this, cessationism, argues the sign gifts confirmed the apostles’ message while Scripture was being written and ended with the finished canon. Careful Christians hold it. We think it is wrong, because the New Testament never says so. Paul says to eagerly desire prophecy and not to forbid tongues, with no end date. And “when the perfect comes” in 1 Corinthians 13 is about knowing fully, face to face, not about a finished Bible.

We cut the other way too. Gifts are not rank. Tongues do not make you a better Christian, prophecy is not a tool for control, and healing is not a performance. Paul put chapter 13 between 12 and 14 on purpose. Without love, it is noise.

According to 1 Corinthians 12:7, why is each believer given a manifestation of the Spirit?

As a sign of personal spiritual maturity
For the common good
Only until the New Testament was completed

Paul says each one is given a manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. Gifts are for building other people up. They are not badges, and the text does not set an expiry date on them.

Everyday Life

Is That The Spirit Or Just Me?

People sense a nudge, a warning, a name that comes to mind, and do not know what to do with it. Jesus gave the key in John 15:26: the Spirit bears witness about Him. So the test is Jesus.

Does It Look Like Jesus?

The Spirit never leads you into something the Jesus of the Gospels would not do. He does not contradict the character He came to reveal.

Conviction Or Condemnation?

Conviction is specific, points you to Jesus and leaves a way home. Condemnation is vague, points you at yourself and leaves you hiding. The first is the Advocate. The second is the accuser.

Does It Grow Love?

His fruit is love, joy and peace. A word that makes you proud, paranoid or cruel toward people is not coming from Him, however spiritual it sounds.

Can It Stand In The Light?

Pray it through, give it time, weigh it against Scripture read through Jesus, and talk to mature believers. Paul says to test everything and hold fast what is good.

For the day to day side of this, keep going with how to walk in the Spirit, and if prayer language is part of your life or your questions, read praying in tongues.

If You Are Afraid You Have Lost Him

Some people read about the Spirit and feel only dread. They worry they have grieved Him too often, or committed the unforgivable sin, or that the silence means He has left.

The Spirit is the one who seals you, and He does not walk out. Your worry about offending Him is itself a sign He is at work in you. The people Jesus warned in Matthew 12 were not anxious at all. We walk through that passage gently in what blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is. And if you want someone to pray with you, reach out to our prayer team.

Where This Lands

Jesus Did Not Leave You On Your Own

Everything the Spirit does leads back to Jesus. He convicts so you will see Jesus, gives birth so you belong to Him, lives in you so He is never far, prays when you cannot, and sends you out as His witness.

That is why Jesus said it was better for Him to go. What the disciples had with Him by the Sea of Galilee they would now have everywhere, all the time, together. In Deer Park or anywhere else, the same Spirit is that close.

So talk to Him. Listen for Him. Expect Him on Sunday and on Tuesday. And if you want a church that makes room for Him, plan a visit and come see.

The Whole Thing In One Line

The Holy Spirit is a Person and fully God, called to your side by Jesus, who convicts, regenerates, indwells, seals, teaches, intercedes, grows fruit, gives every gift, empowers witness and unites the church, so that the risen Jesus is present with His people now.

Questions People Ask

Questions About The Holy Spirit

What is the role of the Holy Spirit?

The role of the Holy Spirit is to make the risen Jesus present in and among His people. He convicts the world, gives new birth, lives in every believer, seals them as God's own, guides them into truth, prays for them in their weakness, grows the character of Jesus in them, gives spiritual gifts, empowers their witness and makes the church one body. He is a Person and fully God, and He does all of this now.

Is the Holy Spirit a person or a force?

A Person. Scripture says He teaches, testifies, can be grieved, can be lied to, intercedes, and hands out gifts as He decides. A force does none of those things. In Acts 5, lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God, and Matthew 28:19 names the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in one name. We confess one God in three distinct Persons, each fully God.

What does Paraclete mean in the Bible?

Paraclete comes from the Greek parakletos, built from beside and to call, so it means one called to your side. It shows up in John 14:16, 14:26, 15:26 and 16:7 for the Spirit, and in 1 John 2:1 for Jesus Himself. Translations say Helper, Advocate, Counselor or Comforter because no single English word carries all of it. The picture comes from a courtroom: someone who stands next to you, speaks for you and does not leave.

Does the Holy Spirit still give spiritual gifts today?

Yes. Nothing in the New Testament sets an expiry date on the gifts, and Paul tells the Corinthians not to forbid speaking in tongues and to eagerly desire prophecy. Healing, prophecy, tongues and miracles are active today alongside teaching, giving, leading and mercy. They are given for the common good, to build people up. They are not proof of rank, and never an excuse for manipulation, hype or a lack of love.

How do I know if the Holy Spirit is speaking to me?

Test it against Jesus. Jesus said the Spirit would bear witness about Him and bring His words to remembrance, so the Spirit never contradicts the character of Jesus. His voice convicts without condemning, leads toward love rather than fear, fits with Scripture read through Christ, and grows clearer in community. If a thought only accuses you, crushes you or feeds your ego, it is not Him. Give it time, pray, and ask mature believers you trust.
