Deep bonds between people are real, and Scripture says so. The chain that needs a ritual to break is not in the text, and it has done real harm to people who were already hurting.
People search for soul ties in the Bible expecting a verse, and there is not one. No verse uses it, and no verse describes an invisible chain created by sex or closeness that has to be broken by a special prayer.
What Scripture does say is simpler and more human. People bond deeply, for good and for harm, and the way out of an unhealthy bond is Jesus, truth, a renewed mind and the people who walk with you.
If you came here scared because someone told you that you are spiritually chained to an ex, or worse, to someone who abused you, take a breath. You are not. Let me show you why from the texts themselves.
The term grew out of deliverance ministry teaching in the last century and spread through booklets, conferences, youth retreats and social media. Plenty of believers now assume it is a Bible word. It is not.
Here is the view at its strongest, because it deserves a fair hearing. Relationships shape us. Sex is not casual in Scripture. People really do stay emotionally hooked to someone long after the relationship ends, and they want language for that. The teaching gives them a name for something they feel. That instinct is honest, and I want to honor it.
The trouble starts with the word soul. English speakers picture a ghostly inner organ that can be tethered to someone else's. The Hebrew Bible does not think that way.
A living, breathing creature, or simply life itself. BibleProject's word study on nephesh makes the point that it describes humans as physical, living beings rather than a separate spirit housed inside a body.
The man became a living nephesh. He does not receive a soul. He becomes one. The whole person is the soul.
The word appears three times in one verse: the nephesh of Jonathan was knit to the nephesh of David, and he loved him as his own nephesh. It means himself, his whole life.
A detachable spiritual part that can be snagged by someone else and held on a line until a minister cuts it.
So when the Bible says one person's soul was bound to another, it is saying their whole life was wrapped up in that person. That is love, loyalty or longing. It is not a spiritual mechanism. I have written more on this in what a soul actually is and soul versus spirit.
Almost every soul tie teaching rests on the same few verses. Each one says something real. None says what the teaching needs.
“As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”
1 Samuel 18:1 · ESVThe verb is qashar, to bind or tie. It is a picture of deep friendship, followed straight away by a covenant in verse 3. It is healthy, it is chosen, and nobody breaks it with a prayer. Genesis 44:30 uses the same language for Jacob, whose life is bound up in his son Benjamin.
His soul clung to Dinah. Verse 2 has just told us he seized her and humiliated her. The attachment described belongs to the man who did harm. The text never says her soul was bound to him, and the rest of the chapter treats what he did as an outrage.
A man will hold fast to his wife and they become one flesh. The verb here, davaq, is the same one used of Shechem. It describes the joining of two lives in marriage, a household and a covenant. It says nothing about spiritual residue left behind by past partners.
Paul quotes Genesis 2 to tell the Corinthians that sex with a prostitute is not a nothing. Then verse 17 turns the whole argument: whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. The union Paul cares about most is with Christ.
Notice what is missing. There is no instruction anywhere to identify your past bonds, list them, renounce them one by one, or cut them. The New Testament has plenty to say about sexual sin, and you can read how we handle that in what sexual immorality means. Its answer is always repentance, grace and a new way of living, never a spiritual scissors procedure.
The texts show that bonds are real and that sex matters. They do not show a chain, a transfer of spirits, or a ritual. When a teaching needs more than the verse says, the extra part came from somewhere else.

Manage My Giving"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."2 Corinthians 9:7
I want to be direct here, because a lot of people have been frightened by this.
Every sexual partner, and in some versions every close friend, every hug and every gift you kept, creates a tie that lets spiritual contamination flow between you. You need a list of ungodly soul ties and a prayer of release for each one, or you stay bound.
You are formed by your relationships and responsible for how you live. If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has passed away. Freedom comes through Jesus and truth, not through getting the wording of a prayer exactly right.
At Sound of Heaven we believe deep emotional and relational bonds are real and that sex carries real weight. We do not believe sex, friendship or physical touch creates an invisible spiritual chain that needs a ritual to break. That teaching adds a mechanism the Bible never describes, and it turns grace into a transaction.
Some versions go further and say demons travel through the tie from one person to another. We do not believe demons are personal beings passing between bodies. What is real is deception, trauma, shame and patterns of thinking that keep people stuck, and those are broken by truth and the Spirit. You can read how we understand what deliverance really is.
And this cuts the other way too. The answer to a fear-based teaching is not to say sex is meaningless or relationships leave no mark. Paul says it matters. People carry memories, longings and wounds from their past. We just refuse to call those things a chain and sell a key.
A transactional version always leaves you checking. Did I name everyone? Did I say it right? That anxiety is the tell. Jesus never makes your freedom depend on a complete inventory.
This teaching does not land evenly. It lands hardest on the people least able to carry it.
Some have been told that because an abuser touched them, they now carry a tie to that person and share in their spiritual state. That is false and it is cruel. What was done to you does not bind your soul to the one who did it. Genesis 34 puts the clinging on the man who did harm, not on Dinah.
They are told grief or lingering feelings prove they are spiritually bound, so healthy mourning gets treated as a problem to be broken instead of a loss to be carried.
Teenagers hear that every kiss or relationship leaves them permanently damaged goods. Purity taught through shame produces shame, not purity.
When someone is trying to get free from manipulation, being told they are still tied in the spirit to that person can keep them afraid and keep them close.
If you were abused, it was not your fault, and nothing that was done to you belongs to you spiritually. You are not defiled, you are not bound, and God is not waiting on you to perform a ritual before He comes close. He is already close.
Healing from abuse usually takes time, safe people and often a trained counselor, and none of that is a lack of faith. So if the chain is not real, what do you do with the pull you feel toward someone you should not be with, or the memory that keeps replaying? The same thing the church has always done with the heart. You bring it into the light and let Jesus change how you think.
“But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.”
1 Corinthians 6:17 · ESVYou are not waiting to get free of old bonds before you can belong to God. You belong to God, and that union is stronger than anything behind you.
Loneliness, attachment, regret, fear, grief. Honest words give you something to bring to God. If there is sin to own, own it and receive forgiveness. Repentance is a turning, not a groveling.
Romans 12:2 says we are transformed by the renewal of the mind. The lie says you are damaged or owned. The truth is you are a new creation. Say it until it sounds normal.
Unfollow, stop texting, stop driving past the house. Guarding your heart is practical, not mystical. Distance lets feelings quiet down.
Isolation feeds shame. A friend, a small group, a pastor and, when needed, a good counselor are how the Spirit usually works. That is not second best to a miracle. It often is the miracle.
In Genesis 34:3, whose soul is said to cling to whom?
The text places the attachment on Shechem, the one who did harm. It says nothing about Dinah being bound to him, and her brothers and the narrator treat what he did as an outrage. The verse most often used against survivors actually says the opposite.
Healing is Jesus, truth, a renewed mind, wise boundaries and people who love you. There is no step in that list where you have to get a ritual right.
Jonathan and David show what a good bond looks like: chosen, loyal, generous, and pointed toward God's purposes. That is what we want for friendships and marriages at Sound of Heaven. Deep connection is a gift, not a danger zone.
And when a connection has hurt you, the answer is not fear. Jesus does not deal in chains and loopholes. He tells the truth, He forgives, He heals, and He surrounds you with His people. Whatever your past holds, it does not own you. You are His.

Soul ties is not a Bible phrase; the texts show real bonds and real weight in sex, never a chain that needs a ritual, and nobody is bound to the person who hurt them, because whoever is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

Soul ties is not a biblical phrase. No verse uses it. The idea comes from modern deliverance teaching, which draws on verses like 1 Samuel 18:1, where Jonathan's soul was knit to David's, and 1 Corinthians 6:16, where Paul says sex joins two people as one body. Those texts show that human bonds are deep and that sex carries real weight. They do not describe an invisible spiritual chain that must be broken through a special prayer. The Hebrew word for soul, nephesh, means the whole living person, so a bound soul means a life wrapped up in someone else.
Sex creates real attachment, and Paul takes it seriously in 1 Corinthians 6, quoting Genesis 2:24 about two becoming one flesh. What he does not say is that sex leaves a spiritual chain that stays until it is ritually cut. His very next line is that whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him. If you have sexual history you regret, the path is honest repentance, received forgiveness and a renewed mind, not a list of names to renounce. Christ's union with you is stronger than anything in your past.
No. Being abused does not bind your soul to the person who abused you, and anyone who teaches that is placing a burden on victims that Scripture never places. The one passage that pairs a clinging soul with sexual violence, Genesis 34:3, puts the attachment on Shechem, the man who did harm, not on Dinah. Survivors often carry trauma, and trauma is real, but it heals through safe people, truth, prayer and often trained counseling, not through breaking a supposed tie to the offender.
The Bible never gives instructions for breaking a soul tie, because it never describes one. What it does give is the way any unhealthy attachment loses its grip. Tell God the truth about what you feel. Repent where there was sin and receive forgiveness. Let your mind be renewed, as Romans 12:2 says. Set practical boundaries, like ending contact. Stay close to people who love you, and get counseling when the wound is deep. No particular wording is required, and your freedom is not waiting on a perfect prayer.
First Samuel 18:1 says the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and it is the verse soul tie teaching quotes most. It describes a deep, loyal friendship, sealed with a covenant in verse 3, in which Jonathan gave David his robe, his armor and his weapons. It is presented as good and chosen, not as something to be broken. If anything, it shows that close bonds are part of a healthy life with God rather than a spiritual hazard to be managed.
