A person seeking to know who the real God is

And How You Can Actually Know HimWho Is The Real God?

Pastor Johnny Ova Sound of Heaven 12 min read

It is one of the biggest questions a person can ask, and it is a fair one. There are thousands of religions and a million opinions about God. So how do you cut through all of it and figure out who the real God actually is? Here is the good news. You are not left guessing in the dark.

Here is the claim at the center of it all: the real God is not a distant force or a vague feeling. He is the self-existent Creator who stepped into human history as a person, Jesus of Nazareth. And unlike a lot of spiritual ideas, that claim leaves fingerprints on history, things you can actually examine.

Let's look at what makes the God of the Bible different, the bold claim that He became one of us, and the real evidence that a thoughtful skeptic can weigh.

Start Here

Everybody Worships Something

Here is a truth worth sitting with. Nobody is truly neutral. If it is not the God of the Bible, it is money, success, romance, self, or a vague sense of the universe. We are all built to give our lives to something. The question is never whether you worship, only what.

The God of the Bible stands apart from all of it in one huge way. Every other god was, in some form, imagined by people. The God of Scripture claims the opposite. He was not invented by anyone. He simply is, and everything else exists because of Him. When Moses asked for His name, the answer was not a title. It was a statement of pure existence.

"God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you."

Exodus 3:14

That is a wild thing for a God to say. Not I am the god of the sun, or the god of war, but I AM, existence itself, the ground everything else stands on.

What Sets Him Apart

Four Ways The God Of The Bible Is Different

He Is Self Existent

He was not made, born, or dreamed up. He depends on nothing and no one. Everything that exists traces back to Him, but He traces back to nothing.

He Is Personal

Not a cosmic force or an impersonal energy. He speaks, He acts, He knows your name. He is a Someone you can actually know, not a something you tap into.

He Is Holy And Loving

Not a distant judge, not a soft grandfather who overlooks everything. He is perfectly good and perfectly loving at the same time, which no invented god ever quite manages.

He Came Near

This is the shocking one. Most gods stay far off and demand you climb up to them. The God of the Bible came down to us. That is where Jesus comes in.

We wrote a whole piece on the false pictures of God most of us carry around, and who He really is, in the biblically accurate God.

The Claim That Changes Everything

Jesus Did Not Just Point To God. He Claimed To Be God.

A lot of people are comfortable calling Jesus a great moral teacher. The problem is, that is the one thing His own words will not let you settle for. He did not merely teach about God. He repeatedly claimed to be God, and He did it in ways His listeners understood perfectly. Remember that name from the burning bush, I AM? Listen to what Jesus said.

"Very truly I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am!"

John 8:58

He took the sacred name of God and applied it to Himself, and the crowd knew exactly what He meant. The very next verse says they picked up stones to kill Him. He also said He and the Father are one, and forgave sins, which everyone knew only God could do. This forces a real decision. The writer C.S. Lewis put it famously. A man who said the things Jesus said is not simply a good teacher. He is one of three things.

Liar
He knew He was not God and said it anyway, deceiving millions.
Lunatic
He sincerely believed He was God but was tragically deluded.
Lord
He said it because it is true, and He is exactly who He claimed to be.

Notice what is missing from that list. Nice teacher. His own claims took that option off the table. You have to decide which of the three He was.

One God, Three Persons

Then What Is The Trinity?

If Jesus is God, and the Father is God, this is the natural next question, and it is where the God of the Bible gets truly unique. Christians believe in one God who eternally exists as three Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Not three gods. Not one God wearing three masks. One God, three distinct Persons, each fully and truly God.

The Father
God above us, the source and sender who so loved the world.
The Son
God among us, Jesus, God in the flesh who came to save.
The Spirit
God within us, the presence who lives in and guides His people.

You see all three together at Jesus' baptism, the Son in the water, the Spirit descending like a dove, and the Father's voice from heaven. And Jesus sent His followers to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. It stretches the mind, and it should. A God small enough to fully fit in our heads would not be much of a God. But it is not a contradiction, it is a relationship of perfect love that has existed forever. It is also why the Bible can say something no other faith says so simply.

"God is love."

1 John 4:8

Can You Actually Check Any Of This?

The Evidence A Skeptic Can Weigh

Here is where the God of the Bible refuses to hide behind vague spirituality. He acted inside real history, in a real place, with real witnesses. You do not have to take it on blind feelings. Consider three things you can genuinely examine.

1
Jesus Was Real, And Even His Enemies Said So

This is not seriously debated. Non-Christian sources confirm Him. The Roman historian Tacitus recorded that Christus was executed under Pontius Pilate. The Jewish historian Josephus mentions Him and His brother James. Even Bart Ehrman, a well known skeptic and agnostic scholar, flatly states that Jesus existed and that virtually every serious historian agrees. You can dig into that outside evidence in this look at the historical Jesus.

2
He Was Publicly Crucified Under Pilate

Both the Bible and those same hostile sources agree on how He died. One leading historian said the crucifixion of Jesus is as certain as anything in ancient history ever gets. So we are not starting with a legend. We are starting with a man everyone agrees lived and was executed.

3
Then Something Turned Cowards Into Martyrs

After the crucifixion, His terrified followers scattered. Within days, those same people were boldly proclaiming they had seen Him alive, and they went to brutal deaths refusing to take it back. Paul recorded a list of more than five hundred eyewitnesses, most still living when he wrote, as if to say, go ask them. People will die for something they believe is true. They do not die for something they know they made up.

The Honest Bottom Line

None of this forces you to believe. But it means the resurrection is not a fairy tale you check your brain at the door for. It is a serious historical claim that best explains a very strange set of facts. Faith here is a reasonable step toward a real event, not a leap into the dark.

From Knowing About To Knowing

How To Actually Meet Him

Here is the thing evidence can never do. It can walk you up to the door, but it cannot make you walk through it. You can know every fact about a person and still not know them. Knowing the real God is finally personal, and the door is wide open. If you are honestly searching, try this.

Read a Gospel. Start with John or Mark. Do not read it as a religious duty, read it as a biography of the most compelling person who ever lived, and watch Him for yourself.
Pray honestly, even if you are unsure. You do not need fancy words. God, if you are real, show me. is a prayer He honors. He is not afraid of your doubt.
Come and see. Faith grows in community, not just in your head. Visit a church, ask your hardest questions, and see what you find.

"You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."

Jeremiah 29:13

That is a promise for the honest seeker. If you want to keep pulling the thread, we lay out the whole story in what Christianity actually is. And if part of what is holding you back is the honest question of pain and suffering, we take it seriously in why God lets bad things happen. Wondering about people who never got this chance? We wrestle with that in what happens to people who never hear the Gospel.

One Last Thing

He Is Not Hiding

Here is what I want you to walk away with. The real God is not tucked away behind some argument you have to win, or some ritual you have to master. The whole message of the Bible is a God who refused to stay distant. He has a name. He has a face. That face is Jesus. And the reason there is so much evidence, so much history, so many witnesses, is that He wanted to be found.

That deep ache you feel to understand it all, that pull toward something bigger, is not an accident. It was put there on purpose, and it points somewhere real.

"He has also set eternity in the human heart."

Ecclesiastes 3:11

That longing has a name, and He is closer than you think.

Quick Answers

Who Is The Real God FAQ

Who is the real God?+

The real God is the self-existent Creator revealed in the Bible, who made Himself fully known in Jesus Christ. He is one God who exists eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and He can be known personally.

Is Jesus God?+

Yes. Christians believe Jesus is God in the flesh. He claimed the divine name I AM, said He and the Father are one, forgave sins, and rose from the dead. He is the one true God who entered history as a man.

What is the Trinity?+

The Trinity is the Christian belief in one God who exists eternally as three distinct Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Not three gods, and not one God in three masks, but one God in three Persons, each fully God.

Is there real evidence for the God of the Bible?+

Yes. Non-Christian historians like Tacitus and Josephus confirm Jesus lived and was crucified under Pilate, a fact even skeptical scholars accept. The empty tomb, the early eyewitness accounts, and the transformation of His followers point strongly to the resurrection.

How can I know the real God personally?+

Start by reading a Gospel like John or Mark, pray honestly even if you are unsure, and visit a church where you can ask real questions. God promises that those who seek Him with all their heart will find Him.
