Five Moves In One Night
Jesus does not explain much of this parable. He tells it and lets it land.
They are not the bride. They are young unmarried women in the wedding party, the ones who light the way.
Verse 5. All ten fall asleep, and nobody is blamed for it. The difference was settled before anyone closed their eyes.
“Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.” All ten get up and trim their lamps, and five of them find out they are running on empty.
The wise say there will not be enough for both. That is not a lesson in stinginess. Readiness cannot be handed to you at the last minute.
Verse 10. The ready ones go in with the groom and the door closes. The latecomers knock and hear the answer from inside: I do not know you.
A torch, lamp or lantern. The ESV gives “torches” as an alternate translation in its footnote.
Torch or lamp, it needed fuel to last the wait. Running out at midnight left you in the dark.
The foolish did bring lamps. They just assumed the night would be short. They are not called wicked. They are called foolish, like the man in Matthew 7 who heard Jesus and built on sand anyway. We cover the least of these in its own article.
